\nFor any true Hip Hop head, Rakim doesn\u2019t need an introduction but just in case, here\u2019s one anyway. Born in\u00a0Wyandanch, New York in 1968, the now 53-year-old MC rose to rap infamy alongside Eric B. with classic albums such as Paid In Full<\/em> and Follow The Leader.<\/em> Due to his tricky, technical rhyming style and lethal pen game<\/a>, Rakim is widely considered one of the best MCs to ever walk the planet.<\/p>\n

During a recent trip<\/a> to Houston, Rakim sat down with The Chron<\/em> <\/a>to talk about his legendary career and hopes for the future of Hip Hop.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause music is supposed to dictate what goes on in the street, at this point, I think by pushing on and taking it to the next level, I think that helps advance what goes on in society,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m hoping that as time goes on, music matures, Hip Hop matures as well so I\u2019m definitely looking for that brother that comes and sparks the next direction of Hip Hop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rakim may come from a different era, but that doesn\u2019t mean he isn\u2019t paying attention to what\u2019s current. Elsewhere in the interview, he noted he was always checking for the latest music from Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Hit-Boy and even 2020 HipHopDX Rapp<\/a>er of the Year Lil Baby.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a big fan of Hip Hop, so I try to listen to a little bit of everything,\u201d he said. \u201cKendrick, Cole, Hit-Boy, Lil Baby. These brothers is making good music and good songs that catch people\u2019s attention. I try to listen to everything and keep my ear to the street.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, Rakim revealed he\u2019d just purchased a new saxophone, continuing his love affair with jazz. Speaking to Chuck D at SITE Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico last year, Rakim opened up about the immense impact jazz great John Coltrane had on him.<\/p>\n

One day, he and his brother, a saxophone player, were listening to Coltrane\u2019s 1961 album My Favorite Things<\/em> when something peculiar made them stop dead in their tracks.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy brother is just like me,\u201d Rakim told the Public Enemy frontman at the time. \u201cWe love music. Me and him were sitting in a room one day playing John Coltrane. My brother played the sax, that\u2019s why I started playing it. Luckily, he was lazy; he\u2019d just put it down and cut out. I\u2019d try to play the same thing he just played by ear. Anything he did, I tried to do. We love music \u2014 analyzing it, critiquing it, enjoying it, whatever.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day, we were sitting there listening to John Coltrane My Favorite Things<\/em>. We got to a certain joint, a live joint, and he played two notes at the same time. We\u2019d heard the song before; we used to play it at least once a week. It was like a ritual.\u201d<\/p>\n
