In Grand Bahama, residents didn\u2019t only see it, but heard a sonic boom, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2021\/apr\/13\/fireball-object-passes-close-to-earth\">the Guardian reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CBS12 reporter Jay O\u2019Brien was recording a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> live story for the local <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> outlet when he saw it race through the heavens and seemingly dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear into a blaze of blue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWOAH! Big flash and streak across sky in West Palm Beach. Happened moments ago while we were on Facebook Live,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jayobtv\/status\/1381796466671357960?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1381796466671357960%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.npr.org%2F2021%2F04%2F13%2F986664216%2Fwhat-is-that-in-the-sky-floridians-catch-meteors-close-brush-with-earth\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cWorking to figure out what it was.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NASA astronomer Bill Cooke <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/story\/weather\/2021\/04\/13\/fireball-explodes-over-florida-and-seen-jacksonville-miami\/7201183002\/\">told the Palm Beach Post<\/a>, it was a nearly 900-pound asteroid fragment entering Earth\u2019s atmosphere at 38,000 mph and disintegrating 23 miles above the Atlantic. In the process of breaking apart, Cooke said, the meteor generated the energy equivalent of 14 tons of TNT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese things just come at random,\u201d Cooke added. \u201cThe atmosphere will break apart anything smaller than a football field.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meteor experts refer to Monday\u2019s fireball \u2014 which was documented by countless <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_view\/event\/2021\/2281#video_box\">dashcams<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cbkcc1\/status\/1381799296819998721?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1381799296819998721%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.npr.org%2F2021%2F04%2F13%2F986664216%2Fwhat-is-that-in-the-sky-floridians-catch-meteors-close-brush-with-earth\">doorbell cameras<\/a> \u2014 as a \u201cbolide,\u201d referring to the fact that it explodes upon entry to Earth\u2019s atmosphere.
