The Broadway lights are dimming for Karen Olivo\u2019s run as Satine in \u201cMoulin Rouge!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Tony-winning actress and singer announced Wednesday on\u00a0Instagram<\/a>\u00a0that she\u2019s leaving the beloved musical, explaining in a lengthy and fiery video post that she will not return to the production in protest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 44-year-old claimed that she\u2019s exiting the Broadway show due to industry silence over the\u00a0harassment and abuse allegations<\/a> against famed film and theater producer Scott Rudin.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoulin Rouge!\u201d producers confirmed Olivo\u2019s exit in a statement to The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can confirm that Karen Olivo will not return to the production when the show resumes performances on Broadway,\u201d a representative said.\u00a0\u201c\u2018Moulin Rouge! The Musical\u2019\u00a0is forever indebted to Karen Olivo\u2019s artistry, passion, and craft in creating the role of Satine on stage. We app<\/a>laud and support Karen\u2019s advocacy work to create a safe, diverse, and equitable theater industry for all. Karen has been an indelible influence on our show from its beginning, and words cannot properly express our gratitude. We wish Karen great success, and above all, love.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, several of Rudin\u2019s ex-staffers came forward and detailed his alleged abusive behavior in the workplace. Ex-employees\u00a0revealed to the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>\u00a0that in 2012, Rudin, 62, allegedly smashed an Apple computer monitor on an assistant\u2019s hand, landing him in the emergency room and leaving the rest of the staff shaken. Another worker claimed that the \u201cSocial<\/a> Network\u201d producer threw a baked potato at his head when he didn\u2019t know the answer to a question.<\/p>\n

\u201cHumanity is more important than my bank account,\u201d Olivo captioned the five-minute video.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSocial justice is more important than being the sparkling diamond,\u201d Olivo began in the clip, referencing one of her most famous \u201cMoulin Rouge!\u201d musical numbers. \u201cBuilding a better industry for my students is more important than me putting money in my pockets. Building a better industry \u2013 I\u2019m yelling now \u2013 building a better industry is more important than putting money in my pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cHamilton\u201d actress added: \u201cFor all of ya\u2019ll who don\u2019t hear me, the silence about Scott Rudin \u2013 unacceptable. Unacceptable. That\u2019s the easy one, ya\u2019ll. That\u2019s a monster. That should be a no-brainer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olivo then conveyed a message to colleagues, asking, \u201cWhat is your integrity saying you should do? You going to protect your pocketbook and let people go to the emergency room, so you can go to your next concert?\u201d<\/p>\n

The stage starlet won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Anita in the Broadway revival of \u201cWest Side Story.\u201d She then earned a Tony nomination in 2020 for originating the lead role of Satine in \u201cMoulin Rouge!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

While Rudin is not directly involved in \u201cMoulin Rouge!,\u201d the Oscar winner is a big player in the world of theater. His recent shows include \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird,\u201d\u00a0\u201c<\/em>Hello, Dolly!\u201d and \u201cThe Book of Mormon.\u201d\n <\/div>\n
