Is Netflix up to the task? The new Netflix series hails from showrunner and writer <strong>Eric Heisserer<\/strong> (<em>Arrival<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Bird Box<\/em>) and is set in a war-torn world full of magic and monsters. A new\u00a0<em>Shadow and Bone\u00a0<\/em>featurette breaks down all the complicated world-building on display here, and goes behind-the-scenes of the series to showcase how they pulled all of this off.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shadow_and_Bone_Featurette\"><\/span><strong>Shadow and Bone Featurette\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shadow and Bone | Building The World | Netflix\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eRiASTGPCgg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->At the start of this featurette,\u00a0Leigh Bardugo, who wrote the<em>\u00a0Grisha<\/em> trilogy that inspired the series and serves as an executive producer, says <em>Shadow and Bone\u00a0<\/em>is set in a world inspired by\u00a0Tsarist Russia of the early 1800s, and the country has been torn in two by a \u201cswath of darkness\u201d called the Shadow Fold. Borders are constantly shifting in this world due to the ongoing war. In the midst of all this there\u2019s the main character \u2013 Alina, who has \u201cjust unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free.\u201d But of course, a solution won\u2019t be so simple (there are future seasons to think about, after all).<\/p>\n<p>Having not read any of Bardugo\u2019s books, I can\u2019t comment much on\u00a0<em>Shadow and Bone<\/em>\u00a0from an informed perspective. What I can say is that what I\u2019m seeing here \u2013 lots of scenes of big bursts of CGI light, aged maps, lots of talk of special powers, and so on, all seems mighty familiar, and\u00a0<em>Shadow and Bone<\/em> will need to take strides to stand out from the rest of many, many other fantasy novel series adaptions we\u2019ve seen. I do like that they\u2019re leaning into the Tsarist Russia influence in terms of costuming, though \u2013 that\u2019s a nice touch.<\/p>\n<p><em>Shadow and Bone<\/em>\u00a0\u201cfinds us in a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems.
