Much of the confusion and concern is centered in Ontario: In addition to implementing frequent changes to eligibility requirements that vary by region, the province is experiencing logistics problems with its decentralized system of delivering shots into arms. The result is that, while Ontario administers more than 100,000 doses a day and has <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2021\/01\/07\/covid-19-vaccine-tracker-tracing-every-dose-of-the-coronavirus-vaccine-administered-in-canada.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around a million doses in freezers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, local health units are cancelling tens of thousands of appointments for lack of supply.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, groups of volunteers are springing up to help. In Ontario\u2019s York region, Shanta Sundarason started <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pinkcars.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pink Cars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which helps people schedule appointments and get to the clinics via volunteer drivers. Groups like <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vaccinehunters.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine Hunters Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which started a month ago, are focusing on spreading information about vaccine availability as widely as possible. On April 12, Vaccine Hunters had 10,000 followers on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. Three days later, that number had climbed to 37,500.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its premise is simple: Tell people across Canada where to find appointments for vaccines. Vaccine Hunters Canada sends out dozens, sometimes hundreds, of tweets a day, each of which starts with the two letter code for the specific province. For example, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VaxHuntersCan\/status\/1382427665584521227?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this tweet from April 14:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">[ON] Ottawa residents ONLY: ~180 AstraZeneca doses available to 55+ year old residents, first dose only (unless you received your first dose 16 weeks ago), valid OHIP card required: call (613) 695-6687 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19Vaccine?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19Vaccine<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19ON?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19ON<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/vhcON?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#vhcON<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Vaccine Hunters Canada (@VaxHuntersCan) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VaxHuntersCan\/status\/1382427665584521227?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh Kalpin, a software developer who lives in Toronto, is a member of the team at Vaccine Hunters Canada. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maclean\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asked him about the group, what it does and how others can help. The conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_and_why_did_Vaccine_Hunters_Canada_start\"><\/span>How and why did Vaccine Hunters Canada start?<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person who created it was originally keeping a close eye on eligibility changes for his parents, and he was able to get both of them vaccinated. He noticed that there was a website called<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccinehunter.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> VaccineHunter.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States, [and thought] we needed something like that in Canada. He created <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vaccinehunters.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VaccineHunters.ca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, set up a Discord server (they have 2,400-odd members on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discord<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the invite-only group chatting platform used to help coordinate activities). And we have a Twitter account, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VaxHuntersCan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@VaxHuntersCan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where we blast out all of our information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_you_find_all_of_these_tips_that_you_are_putting_out_on_Twitter\"><\/span>How do you find all of these tips that you are putting out on Twitter?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We use a tool called Tweetdeck, which acts as a dashboard for our Twitter account. Using Ontario as an example, every public health unit Twitter account is added to [a Twitter] list, and all the hospitals we know of that have different eligibility requirements; reporters as well. We also get a lot of tips on Twitter. \u201cHey, Vaccine Hunters, blah-blah-blah pharmacy has 1,000 appointments.\u201d We were getting tips directly from different places. And we get a lot of direct messages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the [Discord] community<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is giving us a lot of information. People post a lot of things on Reddit<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and we check that throughout the day. A lot of it is becoming crowdsourced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_you_give_some_examples_of_people_Vaccine_Hunters_have_helped\"><\/span>Can you give some examples of people Vaccine Hunters have helped?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our big-name success story is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the actress Jean Yoon, who plays Umma [on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim\u2019s Convenience<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]. We\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jean_yoon\/status\/1377845975193157633?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">got her an appointment from the information we sent out. And she sent us an endorsement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: (\u201cGo to<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VaxHuntersCan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> @VaxHuntersCan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where they\u2019re posting info incl last minute changes,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jean_yoon\/status\/1378163477425094656?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she tweeted on April 2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The information we sent out directly led to her getting a vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then we had someone message us on Twitter saying she had a number of young adults with developmental disabilities and she was trying to get them all appointments. English wasn\u2019t the first language [of some of their parents]; some of [their parents] didn\u2019t drive. We were like, \u201cOK, this one will go here. You can arrange a ride through one of these services.\u201d I think we were able to find every single one of them an appointment this week, which is kind of crazy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of our helpers came in originally because her boss was trying to get an appointment for her father. So we helped her get that. And now she\u2019s turned into the go-to person in the community where random people who are eligible in hot spots are just reaching out to her and she\u2019s gotten easily over 100 appointments at this point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_you_discovering_any_concerns_about_how_accurate_the_information_is_Or_is_that_not_an_issue_right_now\"><\/span>Are you discovering any concerns about how accurate the information is? Or is that not an issue right now?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any time we get a tip, we try to verify it ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many different booking systems. With some [you] just click a couple of buttons to see availability; with some you have to enter information in order to see availability. We have a bunch of people who have made accounts with different systems in order to check them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are very cognizant that a mistake can be bad and we have deleted a number of tweets after we found out that [the information was] not quite true or there was a mistake in the tweet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_the_fact_that_you_have_to_do_this_say_about_the_vaccine_rollout_in_Ontario_and_in_Canada\"><\/span>What does the fact that you have to do this say about the vaccine rollout in Ontario and in Canada?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly, we try to take a very apolitical stance. We identified a problem: We need to get the shots in the arms. The problem is that we have a pandemic and we\u2019ve been in this nightmare for over a year and the way out of this nightmare is a majority [of Canadians get] fully vaccinated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actual logistics of the rollout and all that other stuff doesn\u2019t matter as much to me and doesn\u2019t matter as much to our group. It\u2019s not our place to put blame or anything like that. We\u2019re just here to get things done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if there was a centralized system, there is no way to make this perfect. I think regardless of the circumstances, we would still be needed. And I think that we\u2019re serving a purpose that is important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_there_a_place_where_youre_not_seeing_as_much_of_a_need_for_help_who_where_things_seem_a_little_more_streamlined\"><\/span>Is there a place where you\u2019re not seeing as much of a need for help, who where things seem a little more streamlined?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think Guelph has done a phenomenal job. I think they\u2019ve had very clear messaging overall. They\u2019ve said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to pre-register everyone,\u201d and that\u2019s it. We don\u2019t typically have a lot of people asking questions from [<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wdgpublichealth.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health Unit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ontario_is_the_largest_province_so_its_natural_to_have_a_lot_of_queries_from_there_Are_there_other_provinces_you_dont_really_hear_from_Or_ones_that_are_good_about_promoting_vaccine_appointments_in_clinics_or_pharmacies\"><\/span>Ontario is the largest province, so it\u2019s natural to have a lot of queries from there. Are there other provinces you don\u2019t really hear from? Or ones that are good about promoting vaccine appointments in clinics or pharmacies?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of our community is centered in Ontario. With 38 per cent of the population, there are a lot of people, a lot of different demographics..\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we really want to expand it outside Ontario. We just onboarded one [contributor]<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Quebec. We do have some stuff from Alberta and British Columbia, but it seems like there is a little less <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> from those places. Whether that\u2019s the way the rollouts are happening or not I can\u2019t say, but most of the news we get is around Ontario.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_time_does_it_take_out_of_your_day\"><\/span><b>How much time does it take out of your day?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the question that my manager [of his full-time job]<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is going to hate to hear. If you\u2019re listening, I\u2019m sorry<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[laughing].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of my time spent on this is after work. During the actual day, [I\u2019ll work on Vaccine Hunters] if there is something big. [On April 13], we had 18-plus hotspot alerts in the space in the hour. But most of the time it\u2019s in the evenings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_has_the_reaction_been_from_the_public\"><\/span><b>What has the reaction been from the public?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joy. Exuberance. The reaction seems to be, we help someone get an appointment for a family member or for themselves and then they [want to help]<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other people as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And really, that\u2019s our message here: One of our Canadian values is helping each other. It\u2019s our duty as Canadians to help those who are at risk and most vulnerable, especially with this. And this is Canada in action. Everyone is helping themselves but also helping each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think this group, in addition to helping people, is giving a lot of people who may be stuck at home something that is meaningful in our lives. It is kinda wonderful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Looking_ahead_what_do_you_say_to_other_people_who_are_thinking_of_doing_something_like_this\"><\/span>Looking ahead, what do you say to other people who are thinking of doing something like this?<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would implore every Canadian to reach out to every single person you know\u2014friends, family, co-workers, members of your community, neighbours, people who you know where English or French may not be their first language\u2014and help them get a vaccine if they are eligible.
