“#NYC court clerk allegedly caught calling defendant ‘N-word’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A Manhattan Family Court clerk was caught on a hot mic allegedly calling a black teenage defendant the N-word, according to the young man\u2019s attorney.<\/p>\n

The clerk, Donna A. Prainito, who is white, didn\u2019t realize her microphone was on when she used the racial slur to refer to a 15-year-old in a virtual\u00a0proceeding\u00a0before Judge Jessica Bourbon Thursday, said his lawyer Holden Thornhill.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at the end of a plea proceeding when the judge directed Thornhill\u2019s client to alert an Administration for Children\u2019s Services staffer that the hearing was about to end.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe turns around to do that and as he does that his rear end is now in the camera, inadvertently,\u201d Thornhill recalled in an interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s wearing saggy pants so we\u2019re all looking at his drawers. The clerk in the part mutters at that point, \u2018Look at this f\u2013king [N-word] and his f\u2013king pants. F\u2013king m\u2014\u2014-n,’\u201d Thornhill recalled.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re from New York and someone calls you a m\u2014\u2014-n\u00a0and you\u2019re black you know you\u2019ve been dissed. It has no pleasant connotation,\u201d Thornhill said, referring to the Italian-American slur for a black person.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only did she call him a [N-word], but she called him a m\u2014\u2014-n. I heard it clearly and I was stunned. It\u2019s just stunning to hear that kind of talk in a courtroom,\u201d Thornhill said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The judge said, \u2018Donna, Donna,\u2019 like, \u2018What are you saying?\u2019 was her tone of voice,\u201d Thornton said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thornhill declined to name his minor client or specify\u00a0the allegations against him other than to say he\u2019s accused of being a \u201cjuvenile delinquent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prainito, 58, who earns $110,000 a year as an associate court clerk, later sent Thornhill a text message apologizing, he\u00a0told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Still he plans\u00a0to discuss the matter with the\u00a0prosecutor and the judge when the hearing continues\u00a0Friday afternoon. He does not know if the proceeding was recorded.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShe made a terrible mistake and really showed her true colors in doing so,\u201d Thornhill said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prainito and a spokesman for the court system did not return messages seeking\u00a0comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A high-ranking judicial source said the remark exemplifies a \u201ctoxic culture\u201d in the state court system where a white court officer posted an image of President Barack Obama with\u00a0a noose around his neck on social media<\/a> last summer, and another white officer called a black colleague \u201cone of the good monkeys.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
