Don\u2019t be fooled by the name Morgan Freeman.<\/p>\n

The 83-year-actor app<\/a>ears alongside Ruby Rose in the new action movie \u201cVanquish.\u201d But the Oscar winner can\u2019t lift this heinous material by director and co-writer George Gallo. Popeye couldn\u2019t hoist it up post-spinach.<\/p>\n

The exhausting film is about a former drug runner for the Russians named Victoria, played by model and so-so actress Rose. During one bloody night, crime boss Damon (Freeman) forces the reformed mercenary to murder and rob a slew of gangsters in exchange for her daughter\u2019s safety. He keeps the little girl hostage.<\/p>\n

Throughout the eternal spree, Damon gives Victoria instructions via a Bluetooth headset from a dimly lit den he almost never leaves. He makes helpful comments such as \u201cWow,\u201d \u201cOh, s\u2013t\u201d and \u201cStay awake.\u201d \u201cVanquish\u201d might be Freeman\u2019s easiest role ever \u2014 and, yes, I am aware he played a voice in \u201cThe Lego Movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is the ultimate goal of this orgy of violence? Your guess is as good as mine. Similarly vague is the setting. Rose is Australian, but the mystifying town she\u2019s in is populated by Southern yokel criminals, German thugs and French sleazeballs. Welcome to Deutsch-lanta-ance!<\/p>\n

Each illicit location she\u2019s sent to \u2014 there are five and you count them down in hopes it\u2019ll speed things up \u2014 is proudly nondescript and always tinted blue or green. There\u2019s a cavernous German-speaking nightclub with just two patrons, and a drug lord\u2019s headquarters that belongs in a Peoria cul-de-sac.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The scene in that forgettable house does offer a good lifestyle tip, though. After a bad guy roofies Victoria, she wakes herself up by doing a line of coke off the coffee table. Remember that, kids.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing inherently wrong with films that are little more than compilations of violent sequences. The \u201cJohn Wick\u201d series<\/a> is exactly that, with a bit of backstory thrown in for an occasional breather. But the exquisite action of \u201cJohn Wick\u201d is like watching a ballet \u2026 if in \u201cSwan Lake\u201d everybody was brutally killed. <\/p>\n

In \u201cVanquish,\u201d Victoria is a simple sharpshooter who slides her motorcycle under a semi-truck once \u2014 a move we\u2019ve seen countless times on-screen.\u00a0The fighting is unsatisfying, and renders the film a failure.<\/p>\n

Early in the film Damon goes to confession and says, \u201cBless me father for I have sinned.\u201d Indeed. Say 10 \u201cHail, Marys,\u201d Morgan.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
