{"id":228409,"date":"2021-04-15T18:16:51","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T15:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/nasa-satellite-data-could-detect-volcanic-unrest-years-before-eruptions\/"},"modified":"2021-04-15T18:16:51","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T15:16:51","slug":"nasa-satellite-data-could-detect-volcanic-unrest-years-before-eruptions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/nasa-satellite-data-could-detect-volcanic-unrest-years-before-eruptions\/","title":{"rendered":"#NASA satellite data could detect volcanic unrest years before eruptions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NASA satellite data could detect volcanic unrest years before eruptions<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/nasa-volcano-predictions-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>New research methods\u00a0using\u00a0satellite data\u00a0may be able to detect\u00a0volcanic eruptions\u00a0years in advance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a recent study published in the journal Nature Geo<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>, researchers from\u00a0NASA\u2019s\u00a0Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0University of Alaska, Fairbanks\u00a0said that large-scale thermal unrest measured using a statistical analysis of satellite-based long-wavelength\u00a0infrared data revealed that the last magmatic and steam eruptions of five different volcanoes were preceded by years-long, though subtle, large-scale\u00a0increases in their \u201cradiant heat flux.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although there are already recognizable signals that a volcano is likely to erupt, including seismic activity, changes in gas emissions and sudden ground deformation, accurate predictions are tricky.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition, no two volcanoes are exactly alike and few of the world\u2019s active volcanoes have proper monitoring capability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"\/>\u201cVolcanoes are like a box of\u00a0mixed chocolates: They may look similar, but inside there is a lot of variety between them and, sometimes, even within the same one,\u201d JPL\u2019s Paul Lundgren, the study\u2019s\u00a0co-author,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/jpl\/nasa-satellites-detect-signs-of-volcanic-unrest-years-before-eruptions\">said\u00a0in a\u00a0Tuesday release<\/a>\u00a0from the space agency. \u201cOn top of that, only a few volcanoes are well monitored and some of the most potentially hazardous volcanoes are the least frequently eruptive, which means you can\u2019t rely strictly on historical records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seismologists were able to instruct\u00a0St. Vincent\u00a0residents to evacuate the \u201cred zone\u201d around the island\u2019s\u00a0La Soufriere volcano due to increased seismic activity just hours before its\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/la-soufriere-volcano-eruption-st-vincent-caribbean-2c26166fa05e0ec6840669972ea1aaf0\">eruption<\/a>\u00a0on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0University of the West Indies (UWI)\u00a0Seismic Research Centre\u00a0Director\u00a0Erouscilla Joseph\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/volcano-eruption-in-caribbean-prompts-mass-evacuation-during-popular-vacation-week\">told Fox News<\/a>\u00a0that the team had begun to see the first seismic tremor in the area early Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>NASA explained that the team of scientists had analyzed more than 16 years of\u00a0radiant heat data from the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/search.earthdata.nasa.gov\/search?fi=MODIS&amp;as%5Binstrument%5D%5B0%5D=MODIS\">Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS) instruments\u00a0<\/a>aboard NASA\u2019s Terra and Aqua satellites.<\/p>\n<p>The release also noted that despite the differences in the types of volcanic eruptions under scrutiny, the researchers\u2019 conclusions were uniform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the years leading up to an eruption, the radiant surface temperature over much of the volcano increased by around\u00a01 degree Celsius\u00a0from its normal state. It decreased after each eruption,\u201d the agency wrote, adding later that the scientists theorize the heat increase may result from\u00a0the interaction between magma reservoirs and hydrothermal systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe attribute large-scale thermal unrest to the enhancement of underground hydrothermal activity and suggest that such analysis of satellite-based infrared observations can improve constraints on the thermal budget of volcanoes, early detection of pre-eruptive conditions and assessments of volcanic alert levels,\u201d the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41561-021-00705-4\">paper\u2019s abstract<\/a>\u00a0concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Now,\u00a0the scientists will test their method on more volcanoes.<\/p>\n<p>Fine-tuning their method and using what they\u2019ve learned to supplement existing tools could potentially save lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the goals is to one day have a tool that can be used in near real-time to check for volcanic activity in volcanic areas,\u201d lead author\u00a0T\u00e1rsilo Girona told NASA.\u00a0\u201cEven for small eruptions, there is evidence of thermal unrest before the initiation of the eruption event, so the new method helps bring us a little closer to that goal.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
