“#’Final Fantasy’ maker Square Enix denies sale reports<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The video game<\/a> maker behind the popular \u201cFinal Fantasy\u201d and \u201cKingdom Hearts\u201d franchises shot down reports that it\u2019s up for sale on Friday after the chatter sent its stock price soaring.<\/p>\n

Japanese gaming giant Square Enix tried to quash the rumors following a Bloomberg Japan<\/a> report that said it had received interest from potential buyers.<\/p>\n

CFTN, a specialty news<\/a> outlet focused on mergers and acquisitions, first reported<\/a> Thursday that Square Enix had been app<\/a>roached about a deal, citing two bankers who follow digital gaming transactions.<\/p>\n

But the Tokyo-based firm issued a statement<\/a> firmly denying the reports Friday even as the rumors caused its shares to surge 12 percent to 6,900 Japanese yen ($63.43).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not consider selling off the company or any part of its businesses, nor have we received any offer from any third party to acquire the company or any part of its businesses,\u201d Square Enix said.<\/p>\n

Despite the denial, Square Enix\u2019s Tokyo-listed stock jumped as high as 7,100 yen Friday, not far below the peak of 7,460 yen ($68.58) that it reached last September.<\/p>\n

With a market value of more than $800 billion, Square Enix is responsible for some of the world\u2019s most popular video game titles, including the \u201cTomb Raider\u201d and \u201cDragon Quest\u201d series<\/a> along with \u201cFinal Fantasy\u201d and the Disney-themed \u201cKingdom Hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sale rumors followed a banner year for the industry that saw interest in gaming increase amid the coronavirus pandemic. <\/p>\n

There were also some major tie-ups in the sector last year, Bloomberg News noted<\/a>, including Microsoft\u2019s $7.5 billion takeover of ZeniMax Media<\/a>, the parent company of \u201cElder Scrolls\u201d and \u201cFallout\u201d publisher Bethesda Softworks.<\/p>\n

Gaming industry deals \u201cwill remain robust after record deal volume \u2014 both number of deals and dollar value \u2014 in 2020, with multiple game makers having cash-rich balance sheets, but they will probably target smaller, private developers as opposed to large listed ones,\u201d Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Matthew Kanterman told the outlet.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
