Amazon is often accused<\/a> of treating employees\u00a0like expendable robots.\u00a0And like machines, sometimes they break down.<\/p>\n

A 2019 survey<\/a> of 145 warehouse workers found that 65% of them experienced physical pain while doing their jobs. Almost half (42%) said the pain persists even when they\u2019re not working.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a real shame \u2014 for Amazon. Those pesky injuries can slow down the company\u2019s relentless pace of work.<\/p>\n

But the e-commerce giant may have found a solution. Is it a more humane workload? Upgraded workers\u2019 rights? Of course not. It\u2019s an algorithm\u00a0that switches staff around tasks that use different body parts.<\/p>\n

Jeff Bezos unveiled the system in his final letter<\/a> as CEO to Amazon shareholders:<\/p>\n

We\u2019re developing new automated staffing schedules that use sophisticated algorithms<\/span> to rotate employees among jobs that use different muscle-tendon groups to decrease repetitive motion and help protect employees from MSD [musculoskeletal disorder] risks. This new technology<\/a> is central to a job rotation program that we\u2019re rolling out throughout 2021.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The world\u2019s richest man added that Amazon has already reduced these injuries.<\/p>\n

He said that muskoskeletal disorders at the company dropped by 32% from 2019 to 2020. More importantly, MSDs resulting in time off work decreased by more than half.<\/p>\n

Those claims probably shouldn\u2019t be taken at face value, however. Last year,\u00a0an investigation<\/a> found that Amazon had\u00a0misled the public about workplace injury rates.<\/p>\n

Bezos did acknowledge that\u00a0the company still needs to do a better job for employees. But he disputed claims that employees are \u201ctreated as robots.\u201d<\/p>\n

Employees are able to take informal breaks throughout their shifts to stretch, get water, use the restroom, or talk to a manager, all without impacting their performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He added that Amazon is going to be \u201cEarth\u2019s Best Employer\u201d and \u201cEarth\u2019s Safest Place to Work.\u201d Reports of\u00a0staff peeing in bottles<\/a>,\u00a0shocking injury rates<\/a>,\u00a0union-busting<\/a>,\u00a0invasive surveillance,\u00a0and\u00a0impossible performance targets<\/a>\u00a0suggest he\u2019s got a long way to go.<\/p>\n
