Emily (Alice Lee<\/a>) has been reaching out to Zoey (Jane Levy<\/a>) on Zoey\u2019s Extraordinary Playlist<\/em><\/a> \u2014 that \u201cAnyone\u201d song was heartbreaking in the April 11 episode \u2014 and in the next episode, her sister-in-law tries to help her.<\/p>\n

Emily, who is suffering from postpartum depression, is not ready to speak with her husband, David (Andrew Leeds<\/a>). Fortunately, her sister-in-law Zoey is just the right person to turn to for her, and not just because she hears people\u2019s inner feelings through heart songs.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid\u2019s too close,\u201d Lee tells TV Insider. \u201cI feel like Emily\u2019s not ready at this point to really go to her husband yet. Zoey feels like a safe space for her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lee previews what to expect from the April 18 episode, including Bernadette Peters\u2019<\/a> return as Maggie\u2019s (Mary Steenburgen<\/a>) friend Deb.<\/p>\n

Heading into this week\u2019s episode, does Emily know she\u2019s suffering from postpartum depression? How is she feeling?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alice Lee:<\/strong> We know something\u2019s wrong and Emily is also trying to figure out what she\u2019s feeling. Right now she might be pushing it down. Obviously, no one in the family has noticed yet, so I\u2019d say she has been going through it, it\u2019s just a matter of her realizing and acknowledging it. That\u2019s something we\u2019re going to see in the next episode.<\/p>\n

Why is Zoey the one she\u2019s been reaching out to? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, Zoey\u2019s the main character of our show. [Laughs<\/em>] But also we did see Emily\u2019s sister come in, but I feel like their relationship is a bit strained, maybe not as close where she feels like she can say those things, especially as a sister who\u2019s always had everything together. Emily probably thinks having postpartum is a weakness and doesn\u2019t feel like she can share it with her family. Zoey might feel like a safe space because Zoey\u2019s almost removed. It\u2019s not that her mother-in-law or her husband. I\u2019m not sure.<\/p>\n

How does Emily and David\u2019s relationship at this point, especially since they\u2019re new parents, inform the fact she\u2019s not ready to talk to him yet?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Throughout the season and even last season, we\u2019ve seen Emily and David\u2019s relationship develop. And a lot of what we\u2019ve seen is they always get through everything together, no matter what. He wants to quit his job, it\u2019s OK. We\u2019re going to get through it together. You want to join a band? Sure. Let\u2019s go through it together. I feel like their relationship is very strong, so it is interesting that Emily wouldn\u2019t feel like she could go to David right away. You\u2019ll see in the next episode, a lot of the reason for that is Emily also doesn\u2019t want to put that on David. David\u2019s also been through so much. A lot of Emily\u2019s thinking is, \u201cI don\u2019t want to burden him with more. He\u2019s already going through so much, I don\u2019t want to add to that.\u201d It\u2019s really out of love that she\u2019s trying not to stress him out, which is so sad and heartbreaking.<\/p>\n

Will their relationship remain strong going forward?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think so. David\u2019s going to be there for her. They are couple goals. I think it\u2019s really awesome and refreshing to see a relationship where the partners really try and make it work. They\u2019re really there for each other.<\/p>\n

How does Zoey try to help Emily, and how does Emily respond to that in this week\u2019s episode?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Zoey tries to help Emily by hanging out. She reaches out because so far Emily\u2019s been reaching out to Zoey and Zoey didn\u2019t notice. But now that Zoey knows that something\u2019s wrong, Zoey just keeps trying to figure it out: \u201cI need to help her so that Emily\u2019s not singing these heart songs anymore.\u201d Zoey keeps trying to have a heart to heart, but Emily is totally either avoiding the situation or just denying her depression. She just keeps blowing over it: \u201cNo, no, no. I\u2019m good.\u201d Emily\u2019s constantly trying to reassure people and herself that she\u2019s OK, but Zoey knows that she\u2019s not. For someone like Emily, who isn\u2019t going to reach out for help, you do need someone like Zoey, who\u2019s going to [tell her], \u201cIt doesn\u2019t make you weaker. You have to ask for help.\u201d Sometimes it takes other people to tell you [for you] to realize that.<\/p>\n

They go out dancing. Is that just a distraction or is that also something that Emily needs right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think Emily does need it. Zoey wanted a night in, but Emily is dealing with her depression in different ways. Part of going out is her trying to remember what it\u2019s like to not be a mom, not be a wife, not be going through these emotions. It\u2019s escapism for Emily: \u201cLet\u2019s just go out and get lit. Let me forget about everything.\u201d We can\u2019t run away from our problems.<\/p>\n

You had quite the emotional song at the end of last week\u2019s episode, and in this week\u2019s, you have another one. What can you preview about this week\u2019s song and what it says about where Emily\u2019s head is at?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, it\u2019s another emotional one. It\u2019s different in its vibe. It\u2019s a lot more raw. It\u2019s really cool because I just feel like see another side of Emily that you haven\u2019t seen and it\u2019s a type of song that I haven\u2019t sung yet. Dancing in the location was very fun.<\/p>\n

Bernadette Peters is back and dancing on the Clarkes\u2019 dinner table. What can you tease about what brings her back and her song?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Love Bernadette Peters! She\u2019s so sweet. I\u2019m so excited to have her back. She\u2019s back to hang out with Maggie. She comes in while our family\u2019s having dinner and sings a heart song and just makes such an entrance. She\u2019s just such a great addition to the show. She\u2019s so funny and talented.<\/p>\n

What else is coming up for Emily this season?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are some group [songs] later that she\u2019s a part of. There is going to be a flashback episode, which is going to be super cute because you see where everyone was seven years ago and you see a part of David and Emily\u2019s backstory, which I think is adorable.<\/p>\n
