Andrew Cuomo\u2019s slow pace of reopening. There\u2019s an 11 p.m. restaurant curfew \u2014 it pushes back to midnight on Monday \u2014 and a rule against serving drinks at the bar.<\/p>\n<p>Some await the return of neighborhood crowds while others are caught up in landlord and legal issues. The gnawing absence of so many beloved destinations leaves a gaping hole in the otherwise increasingly buoyant dining scene.<\/p>\n<p>None of the restaurants we look at here has given up its lease, so we can hope they\u2019ll be back one day soon. Here\u2019s what their owners and representatives have to say.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Barbetta\"><\/span>Barbetta<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The elegant, landmark Italian fine-dining temple anchored what\u2019s now called Restaurant Row between Eighth and Ninth avenues for more than 100 years. It pioneered Piedmontese cuisine in New York. Its glamorous setting spread throughout four linked townhouses has drawn romantics throughout its illustrious history.\u00a0A 175-year-old chandelier presides over the 100-seat main dining room that\u2019s decorated\u00a0like an 18th-century palazzo. But its fate is unknown. Laura Maioglio, who\u2019s owned it for about 60 years, is said to be weighing options for its future. She could not be reached.<\/p>\n<p><em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/barbettarestaurant.com\/\">Barbetta<\/a>, 321 W. 46<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0St.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cafe_Boulud\"><\/span>Caf\u00e9 Boulud<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Upper East Side\u2019s luxe haunt for power players, celebs and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ites has been closed as the Surrey Hotel\u2019s new owners, British real-estate moguls Simon and David Reuben, finalize their future plans for the property. Chef Daniel Boulud tells The Post that he has only a year and a half left on the lease. He earlier said it would have to wait until 100 percent capacity is allowed due to its high food and operating costs, but notes there\u2019s now \u201ca plan to be viable at 50 percent\u201d if the rules don\u2019t change by then. So\u00a0chef Daniel Rose\u2019s contemporized French classics like quenelle de brochet and tout le lapin (\u201call of the rabbit\u201d including ears)\u00a0\u2014 and the dining room\u2019s high-ceilinged, whitewashed-brick and chandeliered\u00a0splendor \u2014 seem once again within reach.<\/p>\n<p><em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lecoucou.com\/\">Le Coucou<\/a>, 138 Lafayette St.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Delmonicos\"><\/span>Delmonico\u2019s<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The classic Wall Street-area steakhouse, a New York institution at the same triangle-shaped corner since 1837, was another victim both of the pandemic and a power struggle. The same\u2019s true for his company\u2019s<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thelobsterclub.com\/\"> the Lobster Club<\/a> in the same building and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.santinanyc.com\/\">Santina<\/a> at the foot of the High Line, a rep said.<\/p>\n<p><em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thegrillnewyork.com\/\">The Grill<\/a>, 99 E. 52<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0St.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Modern\"><\/span>The Modern<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s no word on when Danny Meyer\u2019s Union Square Hospitality Group will revive the contemporary American restaurant with formal and casual dining rooms. It\u2019s puzzling because the Museum of Modern Art, where it\u2019s located, reopened to visitors months ago. Reps didn\u2019t get back to us.<\/p>\n<p><em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themodernnyc.com\/\">The Modern<\/a>, 9 W. 53rd St.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Polo_Bar\"><\/span>Polo Bar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ralph Lauren\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2020\/01\/11\/ralph-laurens-polo-bar-celebrates-fifth-anniversary\/?_ga=2.3093942.723233339.1618417384-1620225911.1606143209\">gorgeous underground American restaurant<\/a>, a haunt of power brokers, showbiz stars and supermodels, remains closed \u201cas the team works through the plan and timing for reopening for dinner,\u201d its rep said. So fans of its signature Ralph\u2019s corned beef sandwich will wait a little longer. But we\u2019re told the nostalgically decorated setting festooned with show business caricatures, which\u00a0hosted hundreds of Broadway opening-night parties across from Shubert Alley, won\u2019t reopen its doors until the theaters come back, likely in September.<\/p>\n<p><em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sardis.com\/htmldocs\/cms\/\">Sardi\u2019s<\/a>, 234 W. 44th St.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shun_Lee_Palace\"><\/span>Shun Lee Palace<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Midtown\u2019s last surviving \u201cluxury\u201d Chinese restaurant of the 1970s-1990s era, a premiere celebration venue for families, lovebirds and business deals, offers only limited-hours takeout and delivery. It\u2019s no substitute for the comforting embrace of the Adam Tihany-designed dining rooms. Most of his places are near Broadway theaters and Carnegie Hall. Multi-level jumbo Trattoria, marked by the giant nose out front, was a favorite Midtown Italian spot for more than 35 years. But it\u2019s totally dark (no outdoor seating because the sidewalk isn\u2019t big enough). Fireman first told us he wasn\u2019t sure when he\u2019d reopen Trattoria \u2013 then that he wouldn\u2019t do it \u201cuntil May 30.\u201d The clearer news is that he plans to reopen next-door <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redeyegrill.com\/\">Redeye Grill<\/a> (890 Seventh Ave. at 56th Street) around May 1 and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bond45ny.com\/\">Bond 45<\/a> (221 W. 46th St. in the Edison Hotel) by May 15.<\/p>\n<p><em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trattoriadellarte.com\/\">Trattoria Dell\u2019Arte<\/a>, 900 Seventh Ave. (between 56<em><sup>th<\/sup><\/em> and 57<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0streets)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"21_Club\"><\/span>21 Club<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The fate of the fabled Big Apple institution is the biggest reopening riddle. Owner LVMH announced in December that it was closing the beloved \u201821\u2019 for good \u201cin its current form.\u201d It booted the staff and removed 35 iconic jockey statues from the stoop and railings. At the time, LVMH hinted at an eventual reboot to achieve a \u201cdistinctive role in the city\u2019s future.\u201d This week, LVMH subsidiary Belmond told The Post, via a spokesperson,\u00a0\u201cThe company is exploring potential opportunities that will allow 21 Club to remain a viable operation in the long term while retaining its distinctive character.
