John Stamos wasn\u2019t initially jazzed about playing a basketball coach on his latest show, \u201cBig Shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a band geek in school, I\u2019m a band geek now \u2014 I never played sports, I didn\u2019t watch sports,\u201d Stamos, 57, told The Post. \u201cIt was harder for me to learn basketball lingo than medical lingo when I was on \u2018ER\u2019 playing a doctor, I\u2019m not kidding.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premiering Friday, April 16, on Disney+ (with new episodes out weekly), the sports dramedy series<\/a> centers on Marvyn Korn (Stamos), a men\u2019s college basketball coach who ends up having to work at an all-girls private high school as a last resort after his temper costs him his NCAA job \u2014 much to his dismay.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a call from my agent saying, \u2018You\u2019re getting an offer on the new David Kelley show,\u2019 \u201d said Stamos. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Oh, I love David Kelley! Am I playing a lawyer, is it like one of those dark characters on \u2018Big Little Lies?\u2019 And they were like, \u2018It\u2019s a show about basketball.\u2019 And my heart just sunk. Of all things! I said, \u2018I\u2019m a player?\u2019 and they said, \u2018No, you\u2019re a coach.\u2019 And I said, \u2018OK, great \u2026 what does a coach do?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Despite reservations, Stamos dove into research, he said, spending time with NBA legend Jerry West, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me it\u2019s called \u2018practice,\u2019 not \u2018rehearsal,\u2019 \u201d said Stamos. <\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t just the subject matter that unnerved the actor. The character of Marvyn was outside of his comfort zone, too. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was nothing like anything I had ever done, and it was nothing like me,\u201d said Stamos. \u201cHe\u2019s unlikable, he\u2019s not a people person, he has no charm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once he was on set, Stamos decided the best way to inhabit the crotchety coach was to keep to himself. <\/p>\n

\u201cI had no outside interaction with the cast. I didn\u2019t want to know the girls very well, I wanted to learn about the girls as Marvyn did. It was hard for me, because that\u2019s not how I usually work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Stamos nailed it enough to impress Jerry West, as well as one of his idols: Howard Stern.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was getting texts from a New York number I didn\u2019t recognize, and I got one that said, \u2018Pick up, it\u2019s Howard and Beth!\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cAnd I FaceTimed them, and they just went on and on about how much they liked the show. He\u2019s a hero of mine and a friend and someone I admire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stamos occupies a rare space in Hollywood, since he\u2019s been prominent for several decades with a host of hit shows under his belt (\u201cGeneral<\/a> Hospital,\u201d \u201cER,\u201d \u201cFull House,\u201d \u201cYou\u201d) and he hasn\u2019t seen setbacks or faded into obscurity like many stars of \u201980s and \u201990s shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He attributes his industry longevity to his attitude.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the days of being a prima donna are out the door \u2014\u00a0the days of like, \u2018I\u2019m not coming out of my trailer!\u2019 If someone does that, it\u2019s like, \u2018OK, next!\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s so many actors and actresses out there that need work.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gets it, in part, from lessons he learned from his father, the late restaurateur Bill Stamos.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad was a big influence on me in many things. My dad had restaurants, and he would treat the busboy in the back room washing dishes the exact same way he would treat his best customer. I sort of try to keep that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stamos is a relatively new dad himself, since his son Billy (with actress\/model wife Caitlin McHugh<\/a>, 34) is 3 years old. Staying at home with the toddler, who is named after Stamos\u2019 father, has been the silver lining of the past pandemic year, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI never would have imagined that I\u2019d get this much time with him. But also, it really hits home what\u2019s important and what isn\u2019t important. Obsessing over your career to me is one of those things that I realize is not as important during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quality time with the tot includes watching children\u2019s television together, and showing him snippets of kid-friendly fare that Stamos has done in the past, such as the musical \u201cBye Bye Birdie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut mainly I\u2019m watching kids shows with him \u2026 It sure makes you go like, \u2018Oh man, I\u2019m glad I paid attention to the kind of television I did that was geared towards children.\u2019 Because it is<\/em> a bit of a responsibility,\u201d said Stamos, referring to his long-running stint as Jesse Katsopolis on \u201cFull House<\/a>\u201d (1987-1995).\u00a0<\/p>\n

At 57, Stamos is on the older end of fatherhood, but that doesn\u2019t bother him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad that I have time and energy and patience to spend time with a 3-year-old right now and I don\u2019t have to worry about my career as much or money, or things that a lot of people have to deal with. I\u2019m very lucky and grateful.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
