“#BLM co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors defends real estate holdings<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cMarxist\u201d Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors tearfully defended her $3.2 million real estate empire, insisting she didn\u2019t use a penny of BLM donations on herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have never taken a salary from the Black Lives Matters Global Networks Foundation,\u201d she also said Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s important,\u201d she told host told \u201cBlack News<\/a> Tonight\u201d host Marc Lamont Hill, \u201cbecause what the right-wing media<\/a> is trying to say is that the donations that people gave to Black Lives Matter went towards my spending.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that is categorically untrue and incredibly dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

But in insisting she did not take a salary from the organization\u2019s non-profit foundation, Khan-Cullors left unsaid whether she was paid through BLM\u2019s network of similarly named for-profit entities.<\/p>\n

What that pay might be is cloaked in secrecy, as BLM\u2019s for-profit branches do not reveal spending and executive pay.<\/p>\n

Khan-Cullor is in hot water since The Post first revealed on Sunday that she snapp<\/a>ed up four high-end homes as donations poured into the movement, especially in the wake of horrific video of George Floyd\u2019s death under the knee of a Minneapolis cop.<\/p>\n

Khan-Cullors has said that the nonprofit foundation took in $90 million in 2020<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve not just been a target of the right and white supremacists at this moment,\u201d she said Thursday of the backlash from both the left and the right after the New York Post expos\u00e9 on her property spending spree.<\/p>\n

Khan-Cullors was not specifically asked during Thursday\u2019s interview if she took a salary from BLM\u2019s closed-books for-profit arms. <\/p>\n

But she said she is in favor, general<\/a>ly, of organizers collecting a \u201cliving wage.\u201d And she said she has income streams beyond the BLM coffers.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo your income that you have used to make whatever purchases you have made have come from outside the company. Your income does not come from working directly with the BLMGN?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s correct,\u201d she answered. Again, it was not clear if she was speaking of the group\u2019s nonprofit or for-profit arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a college professor, first of all,\u201d she continued. \u201cI also am a TV producer. And I have had two book deals. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy first book that came out was a New York Times best seller. And I have also had a YouTube deal,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of my income comes directly from the work that I do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I also want to say something, Mark, that feels very important. Organizers should get paid for the work that they do. They should get paid a living wage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She slammed as a \u201clie\u201d The Post\u2019s tip from a real estate agent in the Bahamas, who said she and her wife, BLM Canada co-founder Janaya Khan, recently shopped for a multimillion-dollar property in a luxury oceanfront community there, where they would become neighbors to Justin Timberlake and Tiger Woods.<\/p>\n

She hadn\u2019t stepped foot in the island since a \u201cdancing trip<\/a>\u201d at age 15, she insisted.<\/p>\n

She confirmed that she owns four homes, but said she invested in the properties to take care of her family, she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not renting them out in some Airbnb operation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way that I live my life is in direct support of black people, including my black family members first and foremost,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a child, I have a brother that has severe mental illness that I take care of. I support my mother, and I support many other family members of mine,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy money is not my own \u2014 I see it as my family\u2019s money as well,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Khan-Cullors also took time out to rip the media for reporting on her lavish spending. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that the right wing media is trying to create hysteria around my spending is frankly racist, and sexist,\u201d Khan-Cullors said<\/p>\n

BLM has been distributing its millions in donations to worthy groups fighting white supremacy, she said, including a $27 million commitment to \u201cblack-led organizations, not just our chapters, across the country.\u201d <\/p>\n

She choked up as she described having to hire \u201csecurity\u201d after the negative backlash.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spent the last week with security and, yeah, these articles have shown the homes that I live in and that my family lives in,\u201d she said, sobbing briefly. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard building movements,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n

\u201cI promise you what we\u2019re trying to do is get black people free. That\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do. And we\u2019re going to make mistakes, we\u2019re going to stumble, but we need the community to lift us up, so that we can be accountable in a principled way, in an honest way and most importantly in a loving way.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s happening to me is so not loving. But I\u2019m not the only one this is happening to,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen so many women of color be at the mercy of our movements that we build and also the right wing. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhere do women of color get to go when we make honest mistakes? We need often more help and we are not getting it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She urged members of the BLM movement to \u201cband together.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not a person interested in being \u2018all praise,\u2019 or \u2018all praise Patrisse,\u2019 or \u2018all praise BLM.\u2019 I\u2019m not interested in that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m interested in evolving and growing and the only way we do that is through conflict that\u2019s generative. Not conflict that further harms or makes it dangerous for people to live in their own homes.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
