“#How NASCAR’s Toni Breidinger is gearing up for Talladega<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

After\u00a0Toni Breidinger graduated from high school in northern California, \u2009there was only one place she wanted \u2009\u2009to be: the little town of Mooresville, NC, aka \u201cRace City, USA.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to be a singer, you go to LA,\u201d said the 21-year-old. \u201cYou want to be a NASCAR driver? You go to North Carolina.\u201d <\/p>\n

Breidinger said she loves her adopted hometown because \u201cany time I\u2019m driving down the highway, I see [NASCAR fans] with racing numbers on their cars.\u201d (Mooresville is home to more than 60 racing teams as well as several race-car manufacturers.)<\/p>\n

In February, she made history as NASCAR\u2019s first Arab-American female driver, when she raced in the ARCA Menards Series<\/a> at the Daytona International Speedway, finishing in 18th place out of 33 \u2014 ahead of the two other women who competed. There are about 10 females, and more than 150 men, racing in NASCAR\u2019s various series this year.<\/p>\n

And while there\u2019s been a lot of attention around her gender, Breidinger is chill.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the track, I don\u2019t see myself differently from anyone else. I\u2019m there to go win races, be competitive and be treated as an equal,\u201d she said. \u201cThe car knows no gender, the track knows no gender.\u201cIt\u2019s not something I\u2019m thinking about. I\u2019m here to do my job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now she\u2019s gearing up for her debut at the famed Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, on April 24. It\u2019s a day she\u2019s been anticipating for more than half her life.<\/p>\n

Breidinger has been hooked on racing since she was 9 years old, when she first got behind the wheel of a go-kart alongside her twin sister, Annie. \u201cI just fell in love with it,\u201d she said. \u201cI got super-serious about it fast, like \u2018I want to be a race-car driver.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Her parents \u2014 a preschool-teacher mom, originally from Beirut, Lebanon, and a dad who worked in construction \u2014 bought the girls their own go-kart.<\/p>\n

But while a lot of young racers are all about the need for speed, Breidinger said, \u201cI\u2019m not like an adrenaline junkie. You just get in this super-focused zone when you\u2019re racing . . . nothing else in the world matters. I love how competitive it is. There\u2019s only one winner.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s now the all-time winningest female driver in the United States Auto Club.<\/p>\n

And while Breidinger has had some inevitable accidents on the track, she said, \u201cEven when I\u2019m wrecking, there\u2019s never been a time when I\u2019m really concerned for myself, more so for the damage to my car. I\u2019ve never been scared when I\u2019m driving.\u201d Roller coasters and snakes are much scarier, she insists.<\/p>\n

Scary or not, the racing world can still be frustrating \u2014 and racist and sexist.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been very mean comments on Face\u00adbook, saying I should be racing a camel or .\u2009.\u2009. \u2018First NASCAR bans Confederate flags and lets [black driver] Bubba Wallace race, now this,\u201d said Breidinger, who said she believes she is the only Arab-American racing right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery race I get at least one comment that could be seen as sexist,\u201d she admitted. \u201cI just kind of let it go in one ear and out the other. I think people make these kinds of comments out of ignorance .\u2009.\u2009. not trying to be sexist.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the top comments I get is, \u2018She\u2019s a model trying to be a race-car driver,\u201d said Breidinger, whose sponsors include the Arab-owned brands VibeSzn clothing and Huda Beauty. She\u2019s been an ambassador for brands such as Skims, Kim Kardashian\u2019s shapewear and loungewear line<\/p>\n

Not that she has a lot of time for anything but her driving career. Ahead of hours-long races, Breidinger does cardio workouts in a sauna to ready herself for the high temperatures inside her No. 2 Chevrolet SS \u2014 as much as 30 or 40 degrees higher than the outside temps.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to stay focused and mentally and physically strong when it gets super hot in those cars,\u201d she explained. \u201cSo my trainer will have me get my heart rate up, and then he\u2019ll throw a ball that has numbers on it he\u2019ll have me read.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her rare free time, Breidinger, who is single, hangs out with fellow drivers such as Hailie Deegan, or her pet bunny Fetty Hop (named after rapp<\/a>er Fetty Wap).<\/p>\n

She still loves to hit the local go-kart track and explore the East Coast in her Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 (she admitted to getting a \u201ccouple of speeding tickets\u201d) \u2014 while keeping her eyes on the prize.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like this year, now, is really my moment,\u201d she said. Her next goal? \u201cA Top 10 at Talladega.\u201d<\/p>\n
