“#Netflix’s ‘Shadow and Bone’ EP Teases a ‘High Stakes and Terrifying Journey’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Welcome to the Grishaverse, the dark fantasy world created by bestselling young adult author Leigh Bardugo. In Netflix\u2019s upcoming eight-episode drama Shadow and Bone<\/em>, viewers will dive into this expansive world headfirst \u2014 thanks to Bardugo\u2019s many novels set in the detailed landscape, from the trilogy Shadow and Bone<\/em> to duology Six of Crows<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The story primarily follows the harrowing voyage of self-discovery for newly powered soldier Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) in the fictional wartorn Ravka (inspired by Tsarist Russia). Alina will hone her special sun-summoning powers as an essential part of an elite army hoping to liberate her homeland, but danger (in the form of Ben Barnes\u2018 character General<\/a> Kirigan) is afoot.<\/p>\n

Alina\u2019s story, which is from Bardugo\u2019s Shadow and Bon<\/em>e book trilogy, collides with a trio of creative criminals, known as the Crows (led by Freddy Carter\u2019s cutthroat Kaz Brekker), from Six of Crow<\/em>s. The latter are from Ketterdam, which according to executive producer Shawn Levy (Stranger Things<\/em>), \u201cfeels like a mix of old Amsterdam and a modern Vegas.\u201d<\/p>\n

But both Alina and the Crows are headed towards even darker territory: The Shadow Fold, a pitch-black expanse filled with ferocious horrors like the Volcra. \u201cAny sound, any light, can attract the Volcra,\u201d Levy teases. \u201cCrossing the Fold is a high-stakes and terrifying journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

The highly anticipated fantasy series<\/a> has been compared to the likes of Harry Potter<\/i> and The Hunger Game<\/a>s<\/i>, with elements of other epic adventures (think: Ocean\u2019s 11<\/em>). \u201cIt\u2019s big, fun, romantic, and full of diverse characters,\u201d Levy says of the show.<\/p>\n

And fans of the original tales shouldn\u2019t worry. \u201cLeigh Bardugo has been intimately involved in the adaptation as my fellow executive producer, so any changes have the Bardugo stamp of app<\/a>roval,\u201d Levy promises. \u201cBut there are definitely some new Easter eggs in there for fans of the book to enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n
