“#NYC mayoral candidate McGuire supports lifting charter-school cap<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Democratic mayoral candidate Ray McGuire wants to expand the number of New York City charter schools, he told The Post on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to give our children the best education possible. I want to give parents a choice,\u201d the ex-Citigroup executive said while accepting the endorsement of Rep. Greg Meeks, the Queens Democratic leader.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo child\u2019s future should be determined by\u00a0 their zip code. I want the best quality education in district\u00a0schools, magnet schools, parochials, charter schools,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want the best education for kids in any form \u2014 by whatever means necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

McGuire\u2019s support for charter schools puts him at odds with many of his Democratic opponents; including Andrew Yang, Eric Adams, Scott Stringer and Maya Wiley \u2014 all of whom expressed support for the existing cap during a teachers\u2019 union forum earlier this month, Gotham Gazette reported<\/a>. Adams and Yang said they support adding new charter schools but only by reviving failed schools with existing licenses.<\/p>\n

Incumbent Mayor Bill de Blasio is a longtime charter school antagonist.<\/p>\n

McGuire app<\/a>eared Sunday outside Queens Borough Hall with Meeks and a group of about 150 supporters that included new endorsers State Sen. Leroy Comrie and Assemblywoman Vivian Cook.<\/p>\n

The first-time candidate\u2019s speech took not-so-subtle shots at Yang and career pols Adams and Stringer.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are candidates who are gimmicking like this is a game<\/a> show. The situation in New York is serious,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are candidates who have been running for decades, with well-documented government experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo them I say, you had your chance and look at where we are. To them I say, we\u2019re tired of passing the buck\u2026 We\u2019re tired of excuses.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
