“#Is Bigfoot a pot farmer myth \u2014 or a cold-blooded murderer?<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Is Bigfoot a rampaging serial killer?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the question seeking an answer \u2014 well, more or less \u2014 in a fur-raising new docuseries<\/a> on Hulu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The three-part program \u201cSasquatch,\u201d premiering Tuesday, April 20, explores a wild theory that the mythical creature may be responsible for long-rumored murders and disapp<\/a>earances of three unidentified Mexican men in northern California in 1993.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But is Bigfoot really<\/em> the prime suspect in a decades-old string of cold cases about men reportedly torn limb from limb, for whom no bodies were ever found \u2014 and which exist only as horrific hearsay?<\/p>\n

That depends on who you ask.<\/p>\n

The out-there legend of Sasquatch has long peppered movies (\u201cHarry and the Hendersons,\u201d anyone?) and trashy 1970s TV (\u201cThe Six Million Dollar Man\u201d) and taunted celebs such as Rob Lowe<\/a> and Megan Fox<\/a>, who consider themselves believers \u2014 and even led to 1970s investigations by the FBI. He (or she?) has resulted in wackadoodle sightings from California to Utah to Oklahoma to upstate New York, leaving behind only blurry, grainy photographic evidence \u2014 at best.<\/p>\n

Yet far-fetched stories still circulate among avowed Sasquatch \u201chunters,\u201d who open up in the docuseries about widespread whisperings they\u2019ve heard.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s the one story about a guy out in Weitchpec [in California] who got pulled apart,\u201d relates Bigfoot-seeker James \u201cBobo\u201d Fay in the program. \u201cLike, all four of his limbs and head pulled off. That was back in the early \u201870s. Man, when they see you, they see a big, old slab of meat walking out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adding to the film\u2019s intrigue: The trio of men who are the show\u2019s jumping-off point allegedly were part of an influx of migrant workers toiling on then-illegal, prolific and competitive cannabis farms deep in the foggy redwood forests of Mendocino County.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With that detail, things just get weirder, as some even say the beast may have a hankering for hemp.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been rumors up there about 10-foot-tall pot plants \u2014 the buds on top are all snapped off,\u201d Sasquatch hunter Jerry Hein suggests in the doc. \u201cWell, it\u2019s Bigfoot. They eat \u2019em like corn. Plus, they get a nice, little buzz off it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018This place is f\u2013ked up beyond belief.\u2019<\/p>\n

David Holthouse, investigative journalist in \u2018Sasquatch\u2019<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

But Brooklyn-born \u201cSasquatch\u201d director Joshua Rof\u00e9 \u2014 who also worked on the 2019 docu-series \u201cLorena,\u201d about the infamous, penis-lopping wife of John Wayne Bobbitt \u2014 is less focused on proving or disproving tall tales. With the help of investigative journalist David Holthouse, who interviews the subjects, Rof\u00e9 sets out to learn why people would believe outlandish rumors in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a ghost story. We set out to make a documentary hunting down the source of this ghost story. Not trying to prove the existence or not of this mythical beast, but to find the source of this absolutely insane story about a Sasquatch murdering three people,\u201d Rof\u00e9 told The Post. \u201cAnd so it was a wild thing to suddenly sit down with people who said, \u2018Yes, I\u2019m aware of that story. And I also believe that it happened.\u2019 \u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rof\u00e9 added that he was \u201cclear-eyed going in that the subject of Sasquatch is something that is not taken seriously by most people,\u201d and that he wanted to treat his interview subjects \u201cwith dignity and respect,\u201d rather than outright skepticism. Rof\u00e9 and Holthouse even interviewed Bob Gimlin, who with his late friend Roger Patterson is known for the most famous footage, from 1967, ever captured of Bigfoot.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to treat them the same way I would somebody whose testimony in a court case was the center of a project, you know what I mean?\u201d Rof\u00e9 said of the show\u2019s subjects. \u201cJust, this is a real person. This is what\u2019s important to them and this is what\u2019s true to them. And so let\u2019s hear what they have to say.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Rof\u00e9, the question being asked was less \u201cIs Sasquatch a serial killer?\u201d than \u201cWhat was the culture that existed that would essentially birth and then breed a story like this?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As Holthouse notes in the series, \u201cThere\u2019s a current of belief in supernatural forces that runs deeper up here than I think in most places.\u201d But while doing backwoods interviews with suspicious strangers who felt inherently threatened by outsiders, the filmmakers discovered the subject matter was far more dangerous than daffy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis place is f\u2013ked up beyond belief,\u201d Holthouse asserts in the doc. He says that there is \u201cwidespread\u201d and \u201covert\u201d racism in the area, a place dotted with missing-person flyers and populated by \u201chippies\u201d listening to Grateful Dead while also \u201cpacking AR-15s\u201d and maintaining backyard survivalist bunkers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou go asking around about three dead men and the question you get back the most is, \u2018Which three dead men?\u2019 \u201d he says.<\/p>\n

A source who was an ex-cop even sent Holthouse a cryptic text message at one point, tipping him off about risk amongst the redwoods. \u201cI feel morally and ethically bound to warn you that you are venturing into dangerous territory. Unlike you, I live here and have a family to protect,\u201d the message read, closing with, \u201cPlease be careful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rof\u00e9 backs up those off-putting assessments of the insular, visitor-averse area residents who may have secrets to hide or, worse, bloodthirsty impulses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing that people should be most afraid of is not the boogie man in the woods,\u201d Rof\u00e9 said. \u201cIt is our next-door neighbors who will usually commit acts of violence that will then terrify, you know, everybody on the block or everybody in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very scary,\u201d Rof\u00e9 added. \u201cWe did enter a sort of underworld, you know, for lack of a better term. And, you know, we were really mindful to try and not overstay our welcome.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said that Holthouse sometimes went on interviews solo when a camera crew couldn\u2019t join him \u2014 which wasn\u2019t necessarily a good idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy worst fear was that David was going to go into the woods to meet somebody in a situation where none of us would be allowed to go with him \u2014 and that he would not come back,\u201d Rof\u00e9 said. \u201cAnd that was his worst fear as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without spoiling too many of the film\u2019s eventual conclusions, Rof\u00e9\u2019s assessments zero in on one more grounded, if unnerving, possibility about the real murderous culprits lurking in the woods, one echoed by Holthouse himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t think f\u2013kin\u2019 Bigfoot did it,\u201d Holthouse declares in the docuseries. \u201cNo. I don\u2019t believe in Bigfoot, but I sure as hell believe in greed and that greed turns people into monsters. It\u2019s not Bigfoot making all those people disappear in the woods.\u201d<\/p>\n
