HBO Max\u2019s yet-untitled\u00a0The Batman<\/em><\/strong> spin-off series has been purported to be about Gotham PD<\/strong>\u00a0for months now, with the corrupt police force at the center of the TV show. It was even assumed that fans would get something of an adaptation of the acclaimed comic series\u00a0Gotham Central<\/em>, written by\u00a0Ed Brubaker<\/strong> and\u00a0Greg Rucka<\/strong>, with that series\u2019 diverse cast of characters finally getting their screen debut. But according to Brubaker, that won\u2019t be the case.<\/p>\n

How do you make a\u00a0Batman<\/em> series without Batman? It\u2019s been done before to great success on comic book pages with the excellent 2002 comic\u00a0Gotham Central<\/em>, which centered on a group of Gotham detectives who work in a city where there also happ<\/a>ens to be a crime-fighting vigilante on the loose. So it was assumed that\u00a0Gotham Central<\/em> would be the blueprint for the untitled Gotham PD series that would spin off from Matt Reeves<\/strong>\u2018\u00a0The Batman<\/em>, acting as a prequel to the upcoming Robert Pattinson-led feature film. However, Brubaker, who recently\u00a0recently appeared on\u00a0Kevin Smith<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Marc Bernadin<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Fatman Beyond podcast<\/a>, revealed that this\u00a0The Batman<\/em> spin-off will be more focused on James Gordon. Brubaker said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like \u2018maybe they\u2019re really going to make Gotham Central this time,\u2019 and so I reached out to a producer who works for\u00a0Matt Reeves\u00a0and he says, \u2018no, that\u2019s not really Gotham Central. They\u2019re making sure that they don\u2019t call it Gotham Central and it\u2019s more of a spinoff from the movie. It\u2019s like the James Gordon show.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But technically, didn\u2019t we already have \u201cthe James Gordon show\u201d with\u00a0Gotham<\/em>, the FOX Batman prequel series which also drew inspiration from\u00a0Gotham Central<\/em> before flying off the rails to introduce a murderer\u2019s row of Batman rogues? Jeffrey Wright<\/strong>, who plays Commissioner Gordon in\u00a0The Batman<\/em>, is not yet confirmed to reprise his role in the HBO Max series, but this appears to suggest that he will at least appear in the show \u2014 or at least another actor will be playing a younger version of him.<\/p>\n

In January, it was reported that Joe Barton<\/strong> would be taking over as showrunner for\u00a0The Batman<\/em> spin-off series, replacing Boardwalk Empire<\/em> creator\u00a0Terence Winter. Barton took to Twitter<\/a> last month to tease the tone of the show, tweeting<\/a>, \u201cThere are no good cops.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gotham Central<\/em>\u00a0will be produced by\u00a0The Batman<\/em>\u00a0producer\u00a0Dylan Clark<\/strong>, and Matt Reeves will executive produce through his 6th and Idaho production banner along with\u00a0Daniel Pipski<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Adam Kassan<\/strong>, with\u00a0Rafi Crohn<\/strong>\u00a0serving as a co-executive producer.<\/p>\n
