Like \u201cWarrior\u201d meets \u201cJohn Wick.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marvel has dropped an epic trailer<\/a> for \u201cShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,\u201d featuring a kick-ass protagonist played by Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu. This marks the studio\u2019s first film to center around an Asian superhero. <\/p>\n

Based on the 1970s \u201cShang-Chi\u201d comic books, the martial arts epic follows the saga of Shang-Chi (Liu), an exiled member of an international assassin\u2019s cabal known as the \u201cTen Rings,\u201d as he tries to navigate modern-day San Francisco. <\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, the ex-hitman\u2019s secret gets out and he is pursued by his former terror organization, which happ<\/a>ens to be run by his father.<\/p>\n

The teaser doesn\u2019t disclose much beyond that, but \u201cShang-Chi\u201d promises plenty of high-flying action scenes, whispery exposition speeches and classic superhero gags. <\/p>\n

Along with Liu, \u201cShang-Chi\u2019s\u201d stars Tony Leung, comedienne Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng\u2019er Zhang, Ronny Chieng and more. The film is directed and written by indie drama auteur Destin Daniel Cretton.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most exciting thing about stepping into this character was that his backstory has never been told before,\u201d Liu, 32, told People<\/a> about the landmark role. \u201cWe had a lot of freedom and creative liberty to make it the way that we wanted to.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Marvel has tried to adapt the Shang-Chi character to the big screen. Studio founder Stan Lee had previously attempted to develop a Shang-Chi flick starring Brandon Lee in the 1980s, but the project died on the vine. <\/p>\n

Interestingly, \u201cShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings\u201d comes amid the success of another kung fu epic: Cinemax\u2019s \u201cWarrior\u201d series<\/a>, in which a Chinese martial artist with a mysterious past tries to survive in the brutally sinophobic San Francisco of the 1800s. The series is inspired by the writings of Bruce Lee. <\/p>\n

\u201cShang-Chi\u201d is slated to hit theaters Sept. 3, 2021.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
