Plus, how to get a shot.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday, Ontario and then Alberta dropped their eligibility limit for the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine from 55-plus to 40-plus, starting on Tuesday. On Monday, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.mb.ca\/news\/index.html?item=51137&amp;posted=2021-04-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manitoba did the same<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest changes have spawned even more questions about AstraZeneca\u2019s vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"I_thought_this_vaccine_was_recommended_for_people_55_and_older\"><\/span><b>I thought this vaccine was recommended for people 55 and older\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of March, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/immunization\/national-advisory-committee-on-immunization-naci\/rapid-response-recommended-use-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine-younger-adults.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the AstraZeneca vaccine be limited to those 55 and older to allow time for researchers to analyze a potential link between the vaccine and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rare instances of blood clots<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combined with low platelet counts known as VIPIT (to date, authorities have reported two cases of VIPIT in Canada). The provinces quickly adopted this temporary recommendation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On April 14,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Canada reaffirmed its confidence in AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Canada still considers the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine to outweigh the risks of getting COVID-19, and we are not limiting the use of the vaccine to any specific age group or sex, because all the authorized vaccines have been shown to be very effective at preventing hospitalizations and deaths,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Supriya Sharma, Canada\u2019s chief medical adviser. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We continue to encourage you to get the first vaccine that is offered to you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t find any specific risk factors, such as age or sex, so we are therefore not requiring that the vaccine label be updated to restrict the use of the vaccine at this time,\u201d Sharma said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0What can Canadians do after getting the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccines?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Health Canada\u2019s decision, many experts called on the provinces to relax their eligibility rules below NACI\u2019s 55-year-old cutoff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI notice the places that have expanded access [to AstraZeneca]<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are all places with a lot of transmission in that 40-60 age group,\u201d Dr. Lynora Saxinger, an infectious diseases physician in Edmonton explains in an email.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certainly, the pandemic is worsening in Central and Western Canada. Since the third wave started on March 1, more than <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatriciaTreble\/status\/1384136791410708486?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">257,000 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As well, the number of people requiring hospitalization has jumped by nearly 2,000. On Friday, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19-sciencetable.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Update-on-COVID-19-Projections_2021.04.16_English.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ontario\u2019s independent COVID-19 Science Advisory Table warned<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the next few weeks would be grim as case counts and hospitalizations are expected to soar, putting even more pressure on hospitals and ICUs that are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already at record capacity. Even a higher vaccination rate will do nothing to change those short-term trends, experts warn, though it will affect longer term prospects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_the_drop_to_40\"><\/span><b>Why the drop to 40?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 15-year drop is the biggest one-time change in large-scale eligibility since the vaccination rollout began. It came after a weekend of reports that pharmacies and vaccination sites across Canada had lots of open <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointments amid hesitancy from those 55 and older to getting the vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alberta reported giving <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19data.alberta.ca\/\">10,141 AstraZeneca doses<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on April 12 but five days later, that number had fallen to 1,922. Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an epidemiologist on Ontario\u2019s COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force, revealed that a lot of the doses in the province\u2019s inventory (<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2021\/01\/07\/covid-19-vaccine-tracker-tracing-every-dose-of-the-coronavirus-vaccine-administered-in-canada.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly a million, as of April 18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) were AstraZeneca. \u201cA <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lot of it. It\u2019s not exactly flying off the shelves for the 55+ crowd unfortunately,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BogochIsaac\/status\/1382717129829588999?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he explained on Friday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many doses are still waiting to get into arms is a guessing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. In Quebec, AstraZeneca accounts for roughly half of the province\u2019s 430,000 doses in inventory, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/perreaux\/status\/1384165346471419912?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported Les Perreaux of the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Globe and Mail<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while in Ontario, reports peg that number at around 600,000 (a request for an official count wasn\u2019t answered by the government).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one wants to waste a single dose. And the clock was ticking on those hundreds of thousands of AstraZeneca doses. On April 1, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gray_Mackenzie\/status\/1377666740633632768?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, who is in charge of vaccine distribution, said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that two-thirds of the 1.5 million doses received from the United States expires in May with the rest due to expire in June. (This is similar to the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/astra-zeneca-arrives-tomorrow-1.5933603\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">situation in early March when Canada quickly distributed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and administered 300,000 doses of AstraZeneca that were due to expire in early April.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 in Canada: How our battle to stop the pandemic is going<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, a lot of Canadians under 55 have been saying that they understood the risks involved and just wanted a vaccine\u2014any vaccine. That attitude was on display in a new video commentary by co<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>n Stewart Reynolds in which <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brittlestar\/status\/1383122089943707658?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he addressed the issue of hesitancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cI can\u2019t tell you what brand my tetanus shot was, or my flu shot last year or who makes my asthma medication that I take every day. Most people can\u2019t. Why? Because we trust scientists and doctors to do that for us because they know way more about it than we do. So, when I\u2019m getting my shot, if they don\u2019t happen to have my favourite brand of vaccine when I\u2019m getting it and they say, \u2018AstraZeneca OK?\u2019 I\u2019m going to say, \u2018Sure.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media exploded as word spread of the eligibility tweak. Pharmacy phone lines were jammed by Gen Xers scrambling to secure appointments. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GenXers hustling to get their AZ vaccines like it\u2019s 1983 and they just heard a shipment of Cabbage Patch Dolls has arrived at Consumers Distributing,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KRaymerBishop\/status\/1384183052725673993?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quipped one person on social media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_I_get_the_AstraZeneca_vaccine\"><\/span><b>How do I get the AstraZeneca vaccine?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>ONTARIO: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s available at pharmacies and through family doctors. While the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid-19.ontario.ca\/vaccine-locations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government has a list of pharmacies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chain<\/span><b>s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid-19.shoppersdrugmart.ca\/en\/vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shopper\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rexall.ca\/covid-19\/vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rexall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.costcopharmacy.ca\/appointment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Costco<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have their own registration systems. As well, many independent pharmacies have much, much shorter lists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, pharmacies are often given \u201cwalk up\u201d doses for those without appointments, which they use to keep their vaccination efforts going if someone doesn\u2019t show up for an appointment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>MANITOBA:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The government\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/manitoba.ca\/covid19\/vaccine\/finder.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pharmacy finder page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leads to a searchable map of pharmacies and clinics, with each location providing a dated status update. As well, like Ontario, pharmacy chains have their own booking systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ALBERTA: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ab.bluecross.ca\/news\/covid-19-immunization-program-information.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government has a pharmacy appointment page <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that allows people to select their community, the type of vaccine (select AstraZeneca) and whether one wants a walk-in or appointment. Use the \u201cresults\u201d map to select a pharmacy near you. That pointer then explains how to get the vaccine (for example, an independent pharmacy in the Lynnwood neighbourhood of Calgary offers a phone number with a note that it doesn\u2019t provide walk-in bookings, while a nearby Shopper\u2019s has a link to its online booking system).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to government sites, the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VaxHuntersCan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccine Hunters Canada Twitter feed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a popular source that shoots out current information and starts each tweet with a two-letter provincial abbreviation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"There_are_people_at_higher_risk_than_me_should_I_make_an_appointment_or_wait\"><\/span><b>There are people at higher risk than me; should I make an appointment or wait?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This question has been around for a while, especially as <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2021\/04\/11\/a-tale-of-two-neighbourhoods-jane-and-finch-with-the-lowest-vaccination-rate-moore-park-with-the-highest.html?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialMedia&amp;utm_campaign=GTA&amp;utm_content=taleoftwoneighbourhoods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data emerges showing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that hot spots where residents are at high risk of getting COVID-19 and ending up in hospital are getting vaccinated at rates far lower than areas where residents are wealthier and have better and easier access to the online appointment systems as well as pharmacies and other immunization sites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation occurring in Canada was one faced by Americans a few months ago. That\u2019s when <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/23\/magazine\/should-i-get-a-covid-19-vaccine-when-others-need-it-more.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kwame Anthony Appiah, who writes an ethics column for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, offered this explanation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the priority list, though inevitably imperfect, is a legitimate one, you are perfectly entitled, as an ethical matter, to receive your vaccination. In doing so, you are contributing not just to your own well-being but to the health of the community, given the growing evidence that a vaccinated person poses fewer risks to others, and, finally, to the resilience of our medical system.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0When are COVID vaccines for kids coming to Canada?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxinger says, \u201cIf you have a very low risk situation occupationally, I guess a pause to see how the uptake is going is OK. The idea is<\/span> this [is]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> protection for those at risk and is much safer than getting COVID. If you are working from home, your urgency would be less than [for those in] a workplace where you [have] contact [with] others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_not_drop_the_eligibility_limit_even_lower_than_40\"><\/span><b>Why not drop the eligibility limit even lower than 40?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 7.3 million Canadians in the 40-54 age group. While Canada has received 2.3 million doses of AstraZeneca, including 317,000 doses delivered to the provinces last week, the federal government has <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection\/prevention-risks\/covid-19-vaccine-treatment\/vaccine-rollout.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">given no indication of when future shipments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be arriving and o<\/span>n April 1, Joelle Paquette of Procurement Canada announced a delay of AstraZeneca doses from the Serum Institute of India, though she said that \u201cthey are committed to meeting their contractual [second quarter] obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of the actual count, it\u2019s definitely a lot less than 7.3 million. Still, the age drop means the AstraZeneca doses get cleared off shelves, leaving room for the increasingly large deliveries of vaccines, especially from Pfizer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_about_those_blood_clots\"><\/span><b>What about those blood clots?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some experts are advising a cautious approach to lowering the age limit further, especially as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers investigate the rare instances of blood clots <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combined with low platelet counts known as VIPIT, among younger adults, in particular women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> broke about the eligibility change<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Sunday evening, Dr. Menaka Pai, a hematologist and blood clot specialist at McMaster University in Hamilton, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MPaiMD\/status\/1383985284774203399?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cLove the reduction to 40 yo. And: give scientists time to learn as much as we can. We aren\u2019t trying to be obstructive, but we need to ensure patients (and healthcare professionals) have the best info in front of them.
