Even though ProtonMail has a generous free plan, it falls well short of what Google can offer with Gmail. One of the most limiting factors is likely to be the 500MB inbox size limit.<\/p>\n<p>If you have more than 500MB of email to import, you\u2019ll need to upgrade to a larger plan to transfer the contents of your inbox. Beta access is available to all users of ProtonMail, as this version will eventually become the default version for anyone who uses ProtonMail in a browser.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re using ProtonMail V4 (or later), you\u2019ll see it listed in the version number in the bottom left of the screen when you\u2019re logged in. If you see an earlier version number, head to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/beta.protonmail.com\">beta.protonmail.com<\/a>\u00a0and log in, then click on the \u201cSettings\u201d icon at the top of the screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/settings_protonmail_v4.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"ProtonMail V4\" width=\"650\" height=\"308\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Under \u201cImport &amp; export,\u201d click on \u201cImport Assistant,\u201d followed by \u201cContinue with IMAP.\u201d In the pop-up that appears, click on \u201cGmail\u201d to see instructions on how to prepare your account (Don\u2019t worry, we\u2019ll run through them here.).<\/p>\n<p>Now, head to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mail.google.com\">Gmail<\/a> and log in. Click on the \u201cSettings\u201d cog icon at the top of the screen, followed by \u201cSee all settings.\u201d On the \u201cForwarding and POP\/IMAP\u201d tab, make sure that \u201cEnable IMAP\u201d is on so that the \u201cStatus\u201d area reads \u201cIMAP is enabled\u201d in green text.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/imap_enabled.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Gmail IMAP Enabled\" width=\"650\" height=\"172\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>On the \u201cLabels\u201d tab, make sure that you enable any labels that you\u2019d like to show up by checking them as \u201cShow in IMAP.\u201d If you want to avoid transferring certain labels (like chats), disable them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/show_in_imap.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Show Gmail Labels in IMAP\" width=\"650\" height=\"166\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, head to your Google Account settings at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/\">myaccount.google.com<\/a>\u00a0and log in, and then visit the Security section. Under \u201cLess secure app access,\u201d make sure that you click \u201cTurn on access (not recommended).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you have 2-step verification enabled on your account, you\u2019ll need to create a new app password under the \u201cApp passwords\u201d section instead. Make a note of this password, since you\u2019ll need it for the next step.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723297\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/google_2sv.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Google 2-Step Verification App Passwords\" width=\"650\" height=\"256\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Next, click \u201cStart Import Assistant\u201d (also labeled as \u201cSkip to Import\u201d) to get the ball rolling. You can then make changes to your import so that everything fits. Learn more about importing via ProtonMail V4 on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/protonmail.com\/support\/knowledge-base\/import-assistant\/\">Import Assistant support page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_the_Import-Export_Desktop_App_Requires_Premium\"><\/span>Use the Import-Export Desktop App (Requires Premium)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you have a premium ProtonMail account, you can use the dedicated Import-Export desktop app for Windows, Mac, or Linux to perform a similar import. In addition to this, you can also use the Import-Export app to import locally stored EML and MBOX files from other mail clients.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, download <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/protonmail.com\/import-export\">Import-Export<\/a>, and then follow the instructions to import your mail. This process can be made much easier by simply downloading your entire Gmail history in MBOX format via the official\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/takeout.google.com\">Google Takeout<\/a> service.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/gmail_mbox.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Download Gmail as MBOX\" width=\"650\" height=\"176\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As a paid customer, you have priority access to ProtonMail support to help you with any issues that you might encounter along the way.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Import_Your_Gmail_Contacts_to_ProtonMail\"><\/span>Import Your Gmail Contacts to ProtonMail<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can import your contacts to ProtonMail relatively easily by exporting them as a CSV (comma-separated value) file directly from Google. You can do this by logging in to your Google account at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/contacts.google.com\/\">contacts.google.com<\/a>\u00a0and then clicking on the \u201cmenu\u201d button (which looks like three horizontal lines) and selecting \u201cExport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By default, this will export all of your contacts. If you only want to export certain contacts, head back to the main list and select which contacts you want to export, and then head back to the Export page. Leave the format as \u201cGoogle CSV\u201d and click \u201cExport\u201d to download the CSV file.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/export_gmail_csv.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Export Gmail Contacts as CSV\" width=\"650\" height=\"320\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Head back to mail.protonmail.com and log in, and then click on the \u201cContacts\u201d button at the top of the screen.<\/p>\n<p>From here, you can click on \u201cImport,\u201d and then drag your .CSV file into the window to upload your contacts. Log in at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/contacts.protonmail.com\">contacts.protonmail.com<\/a>\u00a0and then click on \u201cSettings,\u201d followed by \u201cImport.\u201d You can then use the \u201cImport Contacts\u201d button to locate the CSV file and upload your contacts here. If you are using ProtonMail V4 or later, you\u2019ll need to use this method.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Forward_Incoming_Gmail_Messages_to_ProtonMail\"><\/span>Forward Incoming Gmail Messages to ProtonMail<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With your inbox and contacts successfully imported, you will likely want to make sure that any mail going to your old address is forwarded to your new one. If this isn\u2019t the case (for example, if you are \u201cstarting fresh\u201d due to too much incoming mail at your old address), then you can skip this step.<\/p>\n<p>To forward mail from your Gmail account, log in at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mail.google.com\">mail.google.com<\/a>\u00a0and click on the \u201cSettings\u201d cog at the top of the page, followed by \u201cSee all settings.\u201d Under the \u201cForwarding and POP\/IMAP\u201d tab, click \u201cAdd a forwarding address\u201d and enter your new (ProtonMail) address.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/forwarding_address.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Add Forwarding Address to Gmail\" width=\"650\" height=\"255\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Click \u201cNext\u201d and then \u201cProceed\u201d to finalize your decision. Head back to your ProtonMail account, where you should find a confirmation email from Google. Then select \u201cForward a copy of incoming mail\u201d and specify the ProtonMail address you just added. There are a few things that you should remember to do to ensure that you can complete the migration:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Update your online accounts to reflect your email address changes (<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>, online shopping, utilities, health care, and so on).<\/li>\n<li>Notify your contacts of your new address.
