“#New Yorkers gather after Chauvin guilty verdict<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

New Yorkers gathered and marched across the city in droves on Tuesday evening to celebrate the conviction of former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd.<\/p>\n

Cheers and car honking erupted around the Big App<\/a>le \u2014 from Harlem to Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn \u2014 as the guilty verdict came down.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was in my house we were watching the news<\/a> and we all screamed, \u2018Yeah!,’\u201d Beatrice Samuel, 29, of Flatbush, told The Post.<\/p>\n

She was one of hundreds who made their way to Barclays Center in the aftermath of the decision \u2014 including director Spike Lee, who was spotted<\/a> tooling around on his bike and saying hello to passerbys.<\/p>\n

Hours later, multiple marches were on the move throughout the city, with some protesters coming over the Manhattan Bridge from Brooklyn and others walking from Times Square to Washington Square Park.<\/p>\n

At Barclays, some celebrated by dancing<\/a> to \u201cFight the Power\u201d by Public Enemy, footage on Twitter<\/a> showed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy! I\u2019m gonna take a shot to this trial,\u201d said Sharissee Maxwell, 28, of Fort Greene.<\/p>\n

Mayoral candidate Maya Wiley spoke to the crowd at Barclays, telling them, \u201cThis verdict is a moment of justice for the nation \u2014 what we do next is up to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group, which grew to about a thousand, then marched through Downtown Brooklyn to and over the Manhattan Bridge, chanting \u201cOne nation, abolition\u201d and \u201cCan\u2019t bring justice. Only revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to protesters on the corner of Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues, Public Advocate Jumaane\u00a0Williams said: \u201cWe got a little piece of accountability\u2026 but I don\u2019t think it heals a wound.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, dozens of protestors gathered at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building in Harlem \u2014 and broke out into ecstatic cheers of \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d when the verdict was read, according to video on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of people were also in Union Square when the decision came down, including many who\u2019d come out earlier in the day for a free-weed event.<\/p>\n

Black Lives Matter Greater New York co-founder Hawk Newsome addressed a crowd<\/a> of protesters, leading them in a chant of \u201cPower to the people!,\u201d his fist raised in the air.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it was not for us, if it was not for America standing up and saying \u2018Black Lives Matter,\u2019 this wouldn\u2019t have happened!,\u201d he said into a megaphone.<\/p>\n

A group of about 100 rallied there then appeared to march up to Grand Central, chanting \u201cWe love black women\u201d and \u201cWe respect black men, we protect Black men,\u201d footage showed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Several dozen demonstrators also flocked to Times Square, before marching downtown, stopping traffic on 34th Street and Seventh Avenue and ending at Washington Square Park.<\/p>\n

They carried signs that read \u201cJustice for George Floyd,\u201d \u201cAccountability is Not Justice\u201d and \u201cJail All Killer Cops!\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the protesters, Isaiah Fenichel, 23, a Mt. Vernon resident and organizer with Strategy for Black Lives, said he was left feeling \u201cbittersweet\u201d by the verdict.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very happy to see Derek Chauvin be convicted,\u201d Fenichel said. \u201cI am very happy that the system worked in that regard.\u201d <\/p>\n

However, he added, \u201cI\u2019m also cognizant of the fact that it hasn\u2019t worked for so many other people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary Rothfusz, 42, a meditation teacher from East Harlem, yelled and cried in Times Square when the verdict came out, saying she felt \u201cdisbelief that we got all three counts.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately statistically, we don\u2019t win against law enforcement,\u201d she said. \u201cI definitely didn\u2019t think they\u2019d go with the highest punishment\u201d<\/p>\n
