“#Amid Scott Rudin controversy, actors give Broadway ultimatum<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Theater people will march on Wednesday to protest racism \u2014 and Scott Rudin.<\/p>\n

Rudin, the producer of \u201cThe Book of Mormon\u201d and the upcoming Hugh Jackman-led revival of \u201cThe Music Man,\u201d<\/a> among others, recently stepped aside from active participation in those shows after his alleged abusive workplace behavior was revealed by the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The bombshell report, which chronicled Rudin\u2019s alleged history<\/a> of bullying behavior, included claims<\/a> that the \u201cunhinged\u201d producer once attacked an assistant.<\/p>\n

Rudin has since issued an apology<\/a> and on Tuesday announced that he\u2019ll \u201cstep back\u201d<\/a> from his film and streaming projects.<\/p>\n

\u201cMuch has been written about my history of troubling interactions with colleagues, and I am profoundly sorry for the pain my behavior caused to individuals, directly and indirectly,\u201d Rudin said in a statement to the Washington Post<\/a>. \u201cI am now taking steps that I should have taken years ago to address this behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, actors are hoping for more. Thursday\u2019s rally, which begins at 1 p.m. in Columbus Circle, is called \u201cMarch on Broadway,\u201d and the organizers are encouraging participants to wear black shirts and have made specific demands of the Broadway League, a trade organization, and of Rudin himself. <\/p>\n

The asks include:<\/p>\n

\u201c1. Scott Rudin to be removed from the Broadway League \u2013 If he is not removed from the Broadway League, we want restoration. We want Scott to publicly choose 20 [black, indigenous or people of color]-run theaters and donate a LARGE SUM [sic] of money to them.<\/p>\n

\u201c2. A full list of organizations that [Actors Equity] is working with to help black, indigenous, and [people of color] feel safer.<\/p>\n

\u201c3. A full report of how the 2020 Equity dues were spent and what percentage is being spent to help conversations around diversity.<\/p>\n

\u201c4. Achieve greater inclusion for trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming artists.<\/p>\n

\u201c5. We want visibility on how the national council votes for policies. We also want efforts to improve diversity within the council.<\/p>\n

\u201c6. We want to achieve greater inclusion for artists with visible and nonvisible differing abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesman for Rudin had no comment. Reached by The Post, the Broadway League also had no comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
