“#The Conjuring The Devil Made Me Do It First Look Ahead of Trailer \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em><\/strong>, the latest entry in\u00a0The Conjuring<\/em> franchise, will drop its spooky trailer tomorrow. For now, though, some new images have found their way online, along with some comments from director Michael Chaves<\/strong>. Like most of the\u00a0Conjuring<\/em> films so far,\u00a0The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em> is drawing on a true story (although you can expect things to be heavily fictionalized): the murder trial of\u00a0Arne Johnson. In 1981, Johnson murdered his landlord, claiming demonic forces lead him to commit the crime.<\/p>\n

IGN<\/a> has a first look at\u00a0The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em>, the latest\u00a0Conjuring<\/em> movie. Once again, it will star everyone\u2019s favorite ghost-hunting mom and dad,\u00a0Ed and Lorraine Warren, played again by Patrick Wilson<\/strong> and Vera Farmiga<\/strong>. And according to director Michael Chaves, this is going to be the darkest experience yet for the Warrens \u2013 and also the biggest. \u201cIn a lot of ways, this is the biggest Conjuring<\/em> movie,\u201d Chaves said. \u201cI showed the final cut to [star] Vera [Farmiga] and her husband and they agreed, and they were like, \u2018This is the\u00a0darkest<\/em>\u00a0Conjuring movie.\u2019 It digs into some really dark material. This is definitely a case where there\u2019s real consequence, there\u2019s real victims.\u201d
\nThat \u201creal victims\u201d angle is making me uneasy. While the previous two main entries in the\u00a0Conjuring<\/em> films drew on supposedly real stories, neither of those stories involved people being murdered. That\u2019s not the case here, as\u00a0The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em> is based on the true story of Arne Johnson, who murdered his landlord and claimed demonic forces were driving him. Taking a real murder and using it for a movie like this runs the risk of bad taste, to say the least. But I\u2019m willing to give the film the benefit of the doubt because I\u2019m such a fan of the series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Chaves adds: \u201cThis is really taking the Warrens into uncharted places. Being a fan of the franchise, I was honestly really nervous at first breaking with convention, breaking with a lot of things that are tradition, but I think that what we\u2019ve done is really woven the language and the things that you do want from a Conjuring<\/em> film \u2013 the scares, the Warrens, their relationship \u2013 [and [pushed them] to the limits in this really fresh and exciting new direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u00a0also<\/em> says the film is like David Fincher\u2019s\u00a0Se7en<\/em> set in the\u00a0Conjuring\u00a0<\/em>universe. \u201cOne of the things that [series creator] James [Wan] and I connected on while making The Curse of La Llorona<\/em> was sharing a lot of the same favorite movies, and one of them is Se7en<\/em>,\u201d said Chaves. \u201cWe both love that movie, and so when he came to me with this script<\/a>, he basically was like, \u2018It\u2019s Se7en<\/em>, but in the Conjuring universe.\u2019 And he knew that was like catnip for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while previous films introduced multiple supernatural forces \u2013 many of which got their own spin-off films \u2013 Chaves says that\u2019s not going to happen here, adding: \u201cThere\u2019s something fundamentally different with this one and I think that\u2019s honestly what I\u2019m most excited about.\u201d Head on over to IGN<\/a> for more images from the film, and more quotes from Chaves.
