\u201cA Black Lady Sketch show\u201d is a trip<\/a> back to her roots for Gabrielle Dennis, who stars alongside Robin Thede on the HBO comedy series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started out doing standup and sketch comedy \u2014 most people aren\u2019t aware that that was my foundation,\u201d Dennis, 39, told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started making\u00a0a name for myself in the industry, a lot of the jobs I was taking were more theatrical or more serious roles,\u201d said Dennis about her app<\/a>earances on Marvel\u2019s \u201cLuke Cage,\u201d BET\u2019s \u201cThe Game<\/a>\u201d and the Fox medical drama \u201cRosewood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just felt like I was going down this one lane where a lot of the casting directors were only seeing me for certain things \u2026 then, lo and behold, I get a text from Robin Thede and she says, \u2018I\u2019ve been following your career, I\u2019m working on this show and I know that you\u2019re hilarious and I don\u2019t think the world knows that.\u2019 Literally [this show] just fell into my lap kind of happenstance, and the timing couldn\u2019t have been more perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Returning for Season 2 on Friday (April 23) at 11 p.m., \u201cA Black Lady Sketch Show\u201d is exactly what it sounds like and features a cast primarily comprised of black actresses: Dennis, creator Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Laci Mosley and Skye Townsend. Each half-hour episode features comedy sketches covering a variety of topics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For instance, one Season 2 sketch centers on a spy who\u2019s so forgettable-looking that she\u2019s able to escape an assassination attempt (because the would-be assassin overlooks her). Another features a group of women having a party at the end of the world; a third sketch revolves around a woman who\u2019s tracing how her life went off track thanks to a game she played as a child. <\/p>\n

Upcoming guest stars include singer Omarion, Ayesha Curry, Issa Rae (who also executive-produces the show) and Kim Wayans.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my favorite days was working with Kim [Wayans] because she is the ultimate sketch-comedy queen goddess and that\u2019s who I grew up watching,\u201d said Dennis. \u201cSo getting to work with her\u2026I think I had an out-of-body experience. I literally yelped when she walked up. It was so funny, and she was so kind and down-to-earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although she\u2019s done sketch comedy before around clubs in LA, Dennis said that the mostly female cast in \u201cA Black Lady Sketch Show\u201d opens doors for more roles beyond what the genre typically allows.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy first sketch comedy show was with Damon Wayans \u2014 \u2018The Underground\u2019 for Showtime. It was my very first year out in LA, my first big show and I thought \u2018Oh, I\u2019ve arrived, I made it!\u2019 Myself and EdiePatterson were\u00a0 the only girls on that show. It was this great experience, but even in that space you\u2019re kind of limited to what you can do. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut with [\u2018A Black Lady Sketch Show\u2019], it feels very limitless, because I\u2019m able to play a variety of roles. Because there are no men on our show, there have been times when I\u2019ve played a man, or times where you\u2019re just playing things that are out of this world. I\u2019ve always admired Jamie Foxx \u2014 he\u2019s always been the blueprint of what I feel like an artist\u2019s career can be, because he\u2019s done everything.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition to \u201cA Black Lady Sketch Show,\u201d Dennis is also pulling double-duty, appearing in the Netflix sitcom \u201cThe Upshaws\u201d co-starring Wanda Sykes and Mike Epps (premiering May 12).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMike Epps and Kim Fields are in a\u00a0 relationship [on the show] during a point in time that they had taken a break, Mike\u2019s character had another son,\u201d she said. \u201cI will be the mother of said son.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very funny show. They\u2019re middle-class, and I pop in every now and again with the drama that comes with raising a child with two parents who aren\u2019t in the same household. We look at things differently with our parenting tactics, so I get to be some comedic relief.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
