A 21-year-old US Army paratrooper from New York State died while jumping from a helicopter during a training exercise, officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Spc. Abigail Jenks, of Gansevoort, was doing a static-line jump from a UH-60 Blackhawk chopper at Fort Bragg in North Carolina on Monday, when she was fatally injured, military officials said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a positive, happ<\/a>y person. She\u2019s always seeing the good side of things,\u201d her mother, Mary Jenks, told CBS6<\/a>. \u201cShe had an impact on so many people in her life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jenks enlisted in October of 2018 and was assigned to Fort Bragg as a paratrooper in June 2019, after advanced training at bases in Oklahoma and Georgia. She was a member of the famed 82nd Airborne Division.<\/p>\n

Her aunt told the Times-Union<\/a> that Jenks had been engaged to be married next year, and that her death has left the family and her fianc\u00e9 \u201cin pieces.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen her grandmother told me, I just couldn\u2019t stop screaming,\u201d Diana Jenks Klementowski said. \u201cWe all loved her so very much. It\u2019s just a terrible, terrible loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday ordered all flags on State buildings to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Jenks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend our deepest sympathy to Spc. Abigail Jenks\u2019 family and loved ones,\u201d Cuomo said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cWe are devastated by her loss and join her fellow soldiers, family and friends in honoring her service to our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

A graduate of Saratoga Springs High School and the oldest of four siblings, Jenks was remembered as hard-working and creative.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbby was amazing,\u201d her aunt said.\u00a0\u201cShe had a lot of integrity, decency and talent. She was so caring and never disrespectful. I never heard anyone say anything bad about her. It\u2019s not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her battery commander, Army Capt. Brian Norman, praised Jenks as \u201ca creative, hardworking, and confident Paratrooper.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHer love for art, animals, and her friends reverberated wherever she worked, [and] her compassion for fellow paratroopers will be truly missed,\u201d Norman said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Army officials said Jenks\u2019 death is under investigation.<\/p>\n

She will posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
