One of the many reasons a traditional grocery store will reject food from farmers is purely a cosmetic one, such as deformities in a fruit or veggie\u2019s shape, size or color. Other reasons food goes to waste could be farmer\u2019s surplus, size or weight imperfections or items nearing the \u201cbest-buy\u201d date, all of which Imperfect Foods uses to their advantage. <\/p>\n

\u201cGrocery stores want food that looks beautiful and unblemished on the outside, which means that they won\u2019t buy things that don\u2019t live up to these strict standards,\u201d explains the site\u2019s FAQ page<\/a>. \u201cThis means that fruits and vegetables with odd shapes or almonds with scarring are considered \u2018ugly\u2019 and unmarketable, despite tasting just as good as their supermarket counterparts.\u201d <\/p>\n
