Disney<\/strong> and The Jim Henson Company<\/strong> are teaming up to bring Jim Henson<\/strong>\u2018s incredible life to the big screen. The Jim Henson biopic\u00a0Muppet Man<\/em> <\/strong>is currently in development at Disney, with\u00a0The Current War<\/em> writer Michael Mitnick<\/strong> set to pen the story of the legendary puppeteer.<\/p>\n

Deadline reports that Michael Mitnick (The Current War<\/em>,\u00a0The Giver<\/em>)\u00a0has been set to write the Jim Henson biopic\u00a0Muppet Man<\/em>,\u00a0rewriting a previous version of a script<\/a> by\u00a0Adrift<\/em>\u00a0scribes Aaron and Jordan Kandell.\u00a0Henson\u2019s daughter Lisa Henson, who is currently in production on Guillermo del Toro\u2019s upcoming\u00a0Pinocchio\u00a0<\/em>for Netflix, is producing for The Jim Henson Company.
\nMuppet Man\u00a0<\/em>is currently in development at Disney, and will \u201cchart the life and times of the legendary puppeteer, creator of\u00a0The Muppets<\/em>,\u00a0Fraggle Rock<\/em>\u00a0and many of the\u00a0Sesame Street<\/em>\u00a0characters, as well as director of cult films such as\u00a0Labyrinth\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Dark Crystal<\/em>.\u201d The film will specifically focus on \u201cHenson\u2019s\u00a0journey to convince broadcasters that\u00a0The Muppets<\/em>\u00a0was a great idea and how he worked to get the characters on air where they became a comedy staple.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitnick certainly has experience in writing biopics about complicated figures, penning the historical drama\u00a0The Current War<\/em>, which followed the electric feud between\u00a0Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, and starred Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon. Mitnick also wrote for HBO\u2019s\u00a0Vinyl<\/em>, which chronicled the changing music scene of the \u201970s.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0the Muppets back in the public consciousness thanks to the arrival of several beloved\u00a0Muppets<\/em> properties on Disney+, there probably isn\u2019t a better time for a Jim Henson biopic (although ideally,\u00a0Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance<\/em> would also be thriving, but we can\u2019t have it all).\u00a0Disney, which has owned the rights to the Muppets characters since the \u201990s, released the Disney+ series<\/a>\u00a0Muppets Now<\/em>\u00a0last year and the classic\u00a0The Muppets Show<\/em> recently hit the streaming platform.<\/p>\n

There have been several attempts by the Henson Company, which owns Henson\u2019s life rights, to develop a Jim Henson biopic.\u00a0More than a decade ago, The Henson Company acquired Christopher Weekes\u2019 Black List-topping script \u2014 also called Muppet Man<\/em> \u2014\u00a0about the puppeteer, and even had started eying filmmakers like Michael Gracey to direct. It was described as a gritty and innovative take on Henson\u2019s life, though the Henson Company couldn\u2019t get it off the ground without brokering a deal with Disney. And now, here we are.<\/p>\n
