\n The MTA\u2019s largest union wants cops on buses to make sure riders wear masks \u2014 with drivers saying up to half of their passengers don\u2019t cover their faces.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe MTA and the city both should deploy their police to this health hazard. If someone doesn\u2019t have a mask, they should be escorted off the bus and hit with a $100 fine like farebeating,\u201d TWU Local 100 President Tony Utano said in a statement late Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Utan called the scourge of unmasked passengers \u201cmuch worse than farebeating.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is jeopardizing the health of riders and bus operators,\u201d he said. \u201cIf they want social<\/a> workers out there handing out masks, that would be fine too, but there has to be real enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n

An MTA survey last month found 90 percent of subway riders were wearing masks, but one bus operator told The Post compliance is much lower on her route in Manhattan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say it\u2019s 50-50, especially since it\u2019s gotten warmer. I\u2019m not saying I don\u2019t understand that, but we have to wear it for eight hours,\u201d Regan Weal, who currently drives the M14 across town in Manhattan.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be able to wear the mask for the few minutes when you\u2019re on the bus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jason Felix, a bus operator based out of the Gun Hill Depot in The Bronx, said the vast majority of his passengers wear masks \u2014 but conceded that he and many of his coworkers still suffer from the residual effects of the virus, and fear for their health.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they get on out of courtesy they will put the mask on. The bus is so crowded, people want to wear a mask for others,\u201d said Felix, who came down with the virus in March.<\/p>\n

The MTA has lost 132 employees to the coronavirus \u2014 the vast majority of them city bus and subway workers. Since early March, more than 10,000 people out of the agency\u2019s 70,000-person workforce have missed work at one point or another due to the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a second [coronavirus] wave happ<\/a>ens, I know a lot of bus drivers are going to leave,\u201d Felix said. \u201cThey still have a lot of symptoms and they\u2019re struggling with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, MTA rep Abbey Collins blasted TWU for its push for additional enforcement.<\/p>\n

She said a new survey of mask compliance on buses is currently underway, but insisted \u201cthe vast majority of New Yorkers are wearing masks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf riders aren\u2019t following the rules, by law they need to leave the system,\u201d Collins said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to do everything possible to keep customers and employees safe and despite the sideshow, TWU Local 100 knows that.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
