“#Did ‘Organized Crime’ Really Just Go There With Stabler and Benson? (RECAP)<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Episode 4 of Law & Order: Organized Crime<\/em>, \u201c<\/strong>The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of.\u201d]<\/strong><\/p>\n

Quite a bit goes down in the April 22 episode of Organized Crime<\/em>. Undercover detective Gina Capp<\/a>elletti (Charlotte Sullivan<\/a>) plants a bug in mobster Richard Wheatley\u2019s (Dylan McDermott<\/a>) home. SVU<\/em>\u2018s ADA Carisi (Peter Scanavino<\/a>) comes over for a guest spot to turn Richard\u2019s man, Izak (Ibrahim Renno), into the NYPD\u2019s mole. But three words uttered from Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni<\/a>) to his former partner and now SVU\u2019s Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay<\/a>) overshadow everything<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And yes, we are talking about those<\/em> three words: \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

They come in the middle of an intervention Benson holds for Stabler with his five kids, who don\u2019t really have any reaction whatsoever to him telling his former partner \u201cI love you\u201d so soon after their mother, Kathy (Isabel Gillies<\/a>), was killed by a car bomb. (More about that in a bit.) Everyone \u2014 including Stabler \u2014 is worried about the detective because he\u2019s been showing clear signs of suffering from PTSD ever since he popped back up in New York, lost his wife, and set out to find the person responsible (while working for a new unit in the NYPD).<\/p>\n

For example, in this episode, his youngest son, Eli (Nicky Torchia), witnesses his dad punch a hole in the wall of their apartment (goodbye, security deposit), hold up traffic, almost run over a person on a bicycle, and nearly take the door off a car as he focuses on a phone rather than everyone around him. (To be fair, he\u2019s looking for clues as to what happened the night of Kathy\u2019s death. New footage of that night shows a couple taking a selfie as Kathy was approaching the car. He\u2019s trying to track down that couple on social media<\/a> using geotagged photos.)<\/p>\n

After that, Kathleen (Allison Siko) talks to Benson about her concerns regarding her father. \u201cHe won\u2019t talk to us,\u201d she says, referring to herself and her siblings. \u201cHe won\u2019t open up\u2026we need your help.\u201d The intervention the kids have planned \u201cwon\u2019t work unless you\u2019re part of it,\u201d Kathleen tells Benson.<\/p>\n

Stabler knows exactly what\u2019s going on when he walks into his apartment to find his former partner and five kids waiting for him. His PTSD isn\u2019t a secret, Benson tells him. \u201cYou need help,\u201d Dickie (Jeffrey Scaperrotta) chimes in. But he doesn\u2019t want to listen to their concerns and instead directs them to his superior, Sergeant Ayanna Bell (Danielle Mon\u00e9 Truitt). \u201cIf there were any problems, she would recognize it,\u201d he claims.<\/p>\n

Then comes the bombshell, as Benson asks him to tell them what he needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love you,\u201d Stabler tells her. Cue her shock. Then, after a looooong<\/em> moment, \u201cI love all of you,\u201d he adds. Yes, Organized Crime<\/em> just pulled out that clich\u00e9. But we\u2019re not surprised, given how much focus was given to Stabler and Benson\u2019s relationship and how little to his and Kathy\u2019s marriage in the crossover during which his wife died. That\u2019s also why we\u2019re not surprised that his kids didn\u2019t seem to have a reaction to that declaration, especially after Kathleen\u2019s insistence the intervention wouldn\u2019t work without Benson.<\/p>\n

He admits that he knows that he\u2019s \u201cdrowning,\u201d and Benson tells him to \u201ctake our hand, grab on to us.\u201d He\u2019s not ready for that yet. \u201cAll you\u2019re doing is pushing me further under,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s like a weight that is dragging me down.\u201d<\/p>\n

With that, he walks out\u2026and goes to see Angela Wheatley (Tamara Taylor<\/a>), Richard\u2019s ex-wife, because she\u2019s \u201cthe one person\u2026who would understand.\u201d (She lost her son.) Though she offers to let him stay a bit, he doesn\u2019t, but on top of teasing the potential of a Stabler-Benson romance, Organized Crime<\/em> is teasing Stabler drowning his grief in the ex-wife of the man he\u2019s after. Did Kathy really die for this?<\/p>\n

Well, speaking of that, after getting photos from that couple near the scene the night of the car bombing, Stabler is shocked to see that Sacha Lenski (Jess Barbagallo), the one who set off the bomb, was watching from a building across the street and saw Kathy approaching the car. He calls Benson (who ignores it) and leaves her a message: \u201cI wasn\u2019t the target. Kathy was the target. Why would anyone want to kill Kathy?\u201d If the answer is, as it likely is, to get to Stabler, he should know better than to have to ask that question.<\/p>\n

But back to the \u201cI love you.\u201d What is the point of putting that out there if the world of Law & Order<\/em> isn\u2019t eventually going to include a crossover Stabler-Benson romance? And why go there in the way it has so far? We\u2019re feeling pretty good about Organized Crime<\/em>\u2018s chances to return for a second season (Dick Wolf has already detailed what it would entail) and SVU<\/em> is in the middle of a multi-season renewal. There\u2019s time.<\/p>\n

Stabler\u2019s still grieving for his wife, which we are seeing (though it would come across better if he had actually spent time with her when she was dying in the hospital). It feels like Organized Crime<\/em> is jamming in all these moments for the two of them (like the letter in the premiere, the conversation with \u201cyou mean the world to me\u201d in Episode 2, and now the \u201clove\u201d) in as little time as possible simply because they were apart for a decade (during which he was apparently happy with his wife and never even reached out to his former partner).<\/p>\n

Maybe this is all Stabler\u2019s grief and PTSD talking. Maybe it\u2019ll all make sense by the season finale. But right now, it feels like too much too soon after nothing for too long.<\/p>\n
