But the 80-year-old Welshman who crooned such \u201960s classics as \u201cIt\u2019s Not Unusual\u201d and \u201cWhat\u2019s New Pussycat?\u201d \u2014 as well as the 1971 hit \u201cShe\u2019s a Lady\u201d \u2014 isn\u2019t done yet. In addition to keeping his coach\u2019s chair on \u201cThe Voice UK,\u201d he\u2019s releasing \u201cSurrounded by Time,\u201d a collection of covers, on Friday.<\/p>\n

Here, the \u201cSexbomb\u201d singer dishes on turning 80 in a pandemic, the truth about Prince Philip<\/a> once insulting him and if he still wears leather pants.<\/p>\n

How has this past year and change been for you with quarantine?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been all right because I\u2019ve been doing \u201cThe Voice UK,\u201d so that\u2019s kept me busy. That\u2019s really saved my life, you know, being out with people.<\/p>\n

How did you celebrate turning 80 last June in the middle of lockdown?<\/strong><\/p>\n

With me, it\u2019s a large cognac and a Cuban cigar. [Laughs.] It\u2019s strange because in 2019 we were doing a tour, and I thought, \u201cWow, wait till 2020 comes. I\u2019m going to be turning 80. I feel great, I\u2019ve got a great band. What could possibly stop me now?\u201d<\/p>\n

Did you get vaccinated yet?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh yeah. I got my first one before Christmas and then I had the second one on the 6th of January. One good thing about being 80: I was first in line!<\/p>\n

So how did you go about choosing the covers for your new album?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I saved the songs for a long time, and I didn\u2019t record them \u2019cause my wife [of 59 years, Melinda] passed away five years ago<\/a> and I wasn\u2019t all that keen on recording. But time has gone on, and I thought, \u201cWell, it\u2019s time to do [an album] now.\u201d I worked with Ethan Johns, who did my last three albums, and my son Mark co-produced it with Ethan. And it was the first time I recorded in Wales \u2026 Every song on the album has meant something to me during my lifetime. The opening track, for instance, is \u201cI Won\u2019t Crumble with You If You Fall.\u201d Well, when my wife was sick with cancer, she knew she was dying, and she said, \u201cYou can\u2019t fall with me now. I gotta leave, but you don\u2019t have to. You carry on.\u201d So that song is for her.<\/p>\n

You also cover Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cOne More Cup of Coffee.\u201d Has Sir Tom ever met the Bard?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never actually met him. But the closest I\u2019ve gotten to it was six years ago [at the MusiCares Person of the Year tribute in Dylan\u2019s honor]. He said, \u201cLook, the only way I\u2019ll be involved in this is if you can get 10 people on the show that I like singing my songs.\u201d And I was one of the 10 because I\u2019d recorded a [Dylan] song called \u201cWhat Good Am I,\u201d so I went and sang it there.<\/p>\n

Prince Philip just passed, and he once seemingly insulted your singing. How\u2019d you feel about that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We were at Buckingham Palace having cocktails before we went to do this [benefit], and he came over to me and explained what it was all about, which I thought was really nice. He said, \u201cI\u2019m sure you\u2019ve read that I said that you must gargle with pebbles<\/a>. Well, this is the way it went: I was at a small businessmen\u2019s meeting, and they were complaining about not being subsidized by the government. So I used you as an example, in a good way, of a coal miner\u2019s son from a little town in Wales [who] has become this huge pop star \u2026 This man\u2019s voice is so powerful, he must gargle with pebbles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do you still rock your leather pants, Tom?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ah, no. An 80-year-old man in leather pants? I don\u2019t think that would cut it.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
