That could be the case in 2021, especially if Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s\u00a0<em>Nomadland<\/em> scoops up a bunch of the earlier awards. It seems like the most likely film to win more than four or five statues over the course of the evening. But as you\u2019ll see in our breakdowns below, there is still plenty of room for surprises. These are our 2021 Oscar Predictions for Best Picture and Best Director.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Best_Picture\"><\/span>Best Picture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-364838\" src=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/oscar-screenplay-nomadland.jpg\" alt=\"Oscar Screenplay Nomadland\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/oscar-screenplay-nomadland.jpg 800w, https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/oscar-screenplay-nomadland-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to assess what film is most deserving of Best Picture considering the egregious and unforgivable snub of Kelly Reichardt\u2019s <em>First Cow<\/em>, but fine, let\u2019s play by the Academy\u2019s rules and weigh the options.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nomadland<\/em> is the frontrunner and would be a perfectly agreeable, if not surprising, winner. It\u2019s a moving portrait of America anchored by Frances McDormand\u2019s performance. It\u2019s certainly one of the better examples of the type of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> that win Oscars and its victory would be an amenable outcome. <em>The Trial of the Chicago 7<\/em> stands a chance to upset. Voters love a movie based on a true story, and the Aaron Sorkin film delivers in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>If an upset does h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en, it\u2019d be much better if it came in the form of <em>Minari<\/em>. The film has wormed its way into viewers\u2019 hearts with an at once specific portrait of an immigrant family planting roots in Arkansas and a universally tender tale of love and sacrifice. Though I don\u2019t expect it to take home the Oscar, it would be a welcome surprise if it did. Most of the other nominees are good movies that don\u2019t have the momentum to be serious contenders, and also <em>Promising Young Woman<\/em>. (Anna Swanson)<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Should Win:<\/strong> <em>Minari<\/em><br \/><strong>What Will Win:<\/strong> <em>Nomadland<\/em><br \/><strong>What Should Be Here:<\/strong> <em>First Cow<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Best_Director\"><\/span>Best Director<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-364951\" src=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chloe-zhao-nomadland.jpg\" alt=\"Chloe Zhao Nomadland\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chloe-zhao-nomadland.jpg 800w, https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chloe-zhao-nomadland-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s become increasingly common in recent years to see a split in the selections of Picture and Director. If we see that happen with Chlo\u00e9 Zhao and <em>Nomadland<\/em>, frontrunners in both categories, I\u2019d put my money on Director being the slightly more guaranteed win. Think of 2016 when the understated drama <em>Spotlight<\/em> won Best Picture but Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu took home Best Director for the grandiose filmmaking of <em>The Revenant<\/em>. Indeed, Zhao\u2019s assured direction is that of an artist who has never met a landscape she didn\u2019t love or a sunset unworthy of her camera. <em>Nomadland<\/em> is the kind of impressively realized character study that voters will not be able to get enough of, and Zhao will surely be rewarded for it.<\/p>\n<p>But Lee Isaac Chung\u2019s command over perspective in <em>Minari<\/em> is what I believe will linger more than the painterly images of <em>Nomadland<\/em>. He deftly captures the pastoral world of the film through the eyes of seven-year-old David in some of the most heartrending and beautiful sequences. It\u2019s the kind of astute, enveloping direction that doesn\u2019t call attention to itself, but instead leaves you with a subtle and ineffable longing that lasts long after the credits roll. There are far worse directors than Zhao that Chung could lose to, so this category will not be anything close to the worst outcome of the night. But still, it\u2019s a shame he may go home empty-handed.
