“#This Guy Thinks ‘Wokeness’ Is Ruining Disney World — Why He’s Got It All Wrong

\nIf you were wondering why\u00a0Disney World<\/strong> and several names of rides were trending, we can just about guarantee the reason is dumber than anything you guessed.<\/p>\n

It all started with an op-ed in the\u00a0Orlando Sentinel<\/em>\u00a0by a lawyer named Jonathan VanBoskerck<\/strong> entitled,\u00a0\u201cI love Disney World, but wokeness is ruining the experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yep. It\u2019s about that.<\/p>\n

The self-proclaimed Christian and conservative Republican (shocker) explained that all the incremental changes removing the most racist and sexist elements of rides at the park are damaging his experience. He writes:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more Disney moves away from the values and vision of Walt Disney, the less Disney World means to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Um\u2026 \u201cthe values and vision of Walt Disney\u201d? We don\u2019t know how to tell you this, guy, but Walt was widely rumored to be a Nazi sympathizer, so\u2026<\/p>\n

Anyway, that aside\u2026 Make no mistake, his complaints stem from what\u2019s being taken away because of \u201cpolitics\u201d. He doesn\u2019t just want the Disney of his youth \u2014 he never once mentions the change from\u00a0Tower of Terror to Guardians Of The Galaxy \u2014 Mission: Breakout. No, he specifically is upset about changes that are being made out of empathy for marginalized groups who didn\u2019t have as much of a voice in the past.<\/p>\n

The article seems to have been spurred by the recent removal of statues of South American witch doctor character Trader Sam from the Jungle Cruise ride at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, which happ<\/a>ened earlier this month. VanBoskerck writes:<\/p>\n

\u201cTrader Sam is out because he might offend certain people. Every grown-up in the room realizes that Trader Sam is not a representation of reality and is meant as a funny and silly caricature.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

OK\u2026 no one thought Amos and Andy were \u201ca representation of reality\u201d either. It didn\u2019t make it less racist. We can\u2019t believe we have to explain why a \u201cfunny and silly caricature\u201d of a member of another ethnic group is problematic, but here goes. The exaggerated features, as interpreted and designed by white observers, propagate stereotypes that crystallize an idea of \u201cotherness\u201d and serve to subconsciously dehumanize the race on the whole \u2014 especially when that statue is the only representation of that group found there. This sort of understanding is crucial when you\u2019re talking about an attraction that\u00a0will, sadly, be many children\u2019s first experience of a South American person.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the subconscious effect \u2014 the\u00a0conscious<\/em> effect is in actually offending \u201cthe adults in the room\u201d who recognize the caricature as being harmful. Families of all races and creeds are supposed to be made to feel welcome at Disney \u2014 and it\u2019s far from the \u201cHappiest Place On Earth\u201d when you walk in and feel like you\u2019re being put on display and laughed at.<\/p>\n

VanBoskerck says of the decision to remove Trader Sam:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe next time I ride Jungle Cruise I will not be thinking about the gloriously entertaining puns of the skippers, I will be thinking about Disney\u2019s political agenda. That\u2019s a mood killer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Guy. How do you think all the people felt who had to be offended by it for years? Your preoccupation with \u201cidentity politics\u201d is not their problem. You can ignore it because it was never about you. People of color can\u2019t. The only price of them feeling included is that you have to think about it for one moment<\/em>, and already it\u2019s too high??<\/p>\n

Basically the whole thing goes on like that. All the rides you think he\u2019ll mention he mentions: Splash Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean. All the hits.<\/p>\n

All with the same refrain \u2014 making Disney rides less offensive<\/p>\n
