Nearly a decade after Ernest Cline\u2019s\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em><\/strong> sci-fi novel became a smash success, a sequel is on its way to ply you with even more \u201980s references (or perhaps we\u2019ve reached the \u201990s now?).\u00a0Ready Player Two<\/em><\/strong>, the long-awaited sequel to Cline\u2019s 2011 novel, is set to hit bookshelves this November.<\/p>\n

Remember\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em>? Ernest Cline\u2019s glorified \u201cWe Heart the \u201980s\u201d special was a massive hit when it was published in 2011, earning raves for its dystopian sci-fi story about a treasure hunt set in a worldwide virtual reality game<\/a>, and eventually becoming a movie directed by Steven Spielberg in 2018. Well, the Penguin Random House imprint Ballantine Books remembers, and has set Cline\u2019s long-awaited sequel,\u00a0Ready Player Two<\/em>, for publication in North America on\u00a0November 24, 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ballantine Books announced the November publication date for\u00a0Ready Player Two<\/em> on Wednesday, with pre-orders beginning today. Deadline reports that international publication dates will be announced in coming months, with the sequel expecting the exceed the 58 countries and 37 languages in which the original was published.<\/p>\n

While no details have been released about the sequel\u2019s plot, anticipation is surely high for\u00a0Ready Player Two<\/em>, especially after Spielberg\u2019s 2018 blockbuster film turned the series<\/a> into a massive global franchise, with\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em> raking in\u00a0$582.9 million worldwide. Perhaps this\u00a0novel suggests that a sequel movie could follow, though it\u2019s unlikely that Spielberg would return to direct, as the filmmaker rarely helms sequels. But if a filmmaker other than Spielberg were to take the directing reins, it\u2019s uncertain whether a sequel film would be as successful, as even the legendary filmmaker was barely able to elevate the paper-thin source material.<\/p>\n

Cline\u2019s\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em> hit bookshelves right at the height of \u201980s nostalgia, with other \u201980s-theme<\/a>d titles soon to become pop culture phenomenons \u2014 five years later,\u00a0Stranger Things<\/em> would dominate the landscape,\u00a0It<\/em> would come back with a violent vengeance, and\u00a0Ghostbusters<\/em> would return to divisive reception.\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em> was at the forefront of that, and readers ate up Cline\u2019s story about a nerdy protagonist who can rattle off \u201980s references like he memorized all of Wikipedia. But aside from the warm glow of \u201980s nostalgia, there\u2019s not much to write home about for\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em>, which featured a generic and retrograde sci-fi dystopia plot, and juvenile writing that made for a breezy read but a forgettable experience. Now that we\u2019ve reached the saturation point for \u201980s nostalgia, I wonder if people will realize that Cline\u2019s writing just isn\u2019t that good \u2014 especially if he\u2019s exhausted all the \u201980s references he could make with the first book.<\/p>\n
