\u201cThe Mosquito Coast\u201d is an unlikely reunion for its two stars, Melissa George and Justin Theroux.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cJustin and I worked together on \u2018Mulholland Drive\u2019 20 years ago, which is unbelievable,\u201d George, 44, told The Post about the new App<\/a>le TV+ drama.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was the director in the film [within that 2001 David Lynch movie] and I was the actress singing for him\u2026then, two decades later, we\u2019re married and fighting our way through the jungle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Mosquito Coast,\u201d premiering April 30, follows Allie Fox (Theroux), an idealistic man who uproots his family \u2014 wife Margot (George), son Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) and daughter Diana (Logan Polish) \u2014 from California to Latin America when he becomes disgusted with the civilized world (and criminal charges from his past that come up, enticing him to flee). <\/p>\n

It\u2019s based on the 1981\u00a0 novel<\/a> of the same name, which was adapted into the 1986 movie starring Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Phoenix.<\/p>\n

\u201cI naively was sent the script not knowing that it was a book or a film at the very beginning,\u201d said George. \u201cThen of course I did my research. I fell in love with the idea of this fugitive family on the run and Margot was such a complex character, kind of like a Bonnie to Clyde. I so wanted the part but I couldn\u2019t bring myself to [read] for it because I was too afraid to lose it and not get it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But a talk with Theroux changed her mind.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d kept in touch a little bit [since \u2018Mulholland Drive\u2019]. I saw him once or twice over the two decades and for some reason he still had my [phone] number. And when the casting was happening, he called and said, \u2018Why are you not reading for this?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

An Australian who\u2019s now based on Paris, George is known for a slew of movies (\u201cDark City,\u201d \u201c30 Days of Night\u201d) and TV series<\/a> including \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy,\u201d \u201cThe Good Wife\u201d and \u201cAlias.\u201d But it was her 2008\u00a0role opposite Gabriel Byrne on HBO\u2019s psychologist show \u201cIn Treatment\u201d that really helped her prepare for \u201cThe Mosquito Coast\u201d \u2014 since she was inspired to pursue an unusual way of going \u201cmethod\u201d to play Margot.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to see a psychologist as Margot,\u201d she said. \u201cAfter about three sessions, they realized I wasn\u2019t her \u2014 that I was just playing her \u2014 so that raised many questions! I went to try and see if I could understand why a woman would stay with a man like that; what keeps her, what she stays on the run for. I got this inspiration from playing Laura from \u2018In Treatment,\u2019 a series where I was a patient in therapy. I thought that if I could reverse it and understand more about the character I was playing, I could get so much more information than sitting there and figuring her out on my own. <\/p>\n

\u201cI basically sat there as Margot, to talk about, \u2018I\u2019m on the run, I\u2019ve been hiding for years, I haven\u2019t seen my family, I call my mother once a year on her birthday.\u2019 So to me that was the most amazing training. Most people go to see [psychologists] to understand themselves \u2014 but for me it was an opportunity to understand the person I was playing. <\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing a therapist as Margot really gave me the way to play her.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
