BRUSSELS, April 23 \u2013\u00a0Facial\u00a0recognition\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0banned\u00a0in\u00a0Europe because of its \u201cdeep and non-democratic intrusion\u201d into people\u2019s private lives,\u00a0EU\u00a0privacy\u00a0watchdog\u00a0the\u00a0European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) said on Friday.<\/p>\n

The comments come two days after the\u00a0European Commission proposed draft rules that would allow\u00a0facial\u00a0recognition\u00a0to be used to search for missing children or criminals and in cases of terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n

The draft rules, which need to be thrashed out with\u00a0EU\u00a0countries and the\u00a0European Parliament, are an attempt by the Commission to set global rules for artificial intelligence, a technology<\/a> dominated by China and the United States.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0privacy\u00a0watchdog\u00a0said it regretted that the Commission had not heeded its earlier call to ban\u00a0facial\u00a0recognition\u00a0in public spaces.<\/p>\n

\u201cA stricter app<\/a>roach is necessary given that remote biometric identification, where AI may contribute to unprecedented developments, presents extremely high risks of deep and non-democratic intrusion into individuals\u2019 private lives,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EDPS will focus in particular on setting precise boundaries for those tools and systems which may present risks for the fundamental rights to data protection and\u00a0privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Commission\u2019s proposals have drawn criticism from civil rights groups, concerned about loopholes that may allow authoritarian governments to abuse AI to clamp down on people\u2019s rights. (Reporting by Foo Yun Chee; Editing by Kirsten Donovan)\n <\/p><\/div>\n
