It has the world\u2019s fastest-rising economies, which are supported by innovations in technology and cryptocurrency that are energy-intensive. This results in the highest growth in electricity generation, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/asiapacific\">fueled<\/a> predominantly (85%) by fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-04\/b76bf372-761d-41dc-a367-4f0dd648b455.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>Three out of the six largest carbon dioxide-emitting countries in the world \u2014 China, India and Japan \u2014 are in the Asia-Pacific region, an area that produces about half of the world\u2019s carbon dioxide emissions. As a result, the region is also increasingly impacted by extreme weather events.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-04\/bd5576fa-a149-4b6e-925f-88da4c9628f8.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>With 2020 witnessing the COVID-19 pandemic and being the warmest year on record, there is an urgent need to decouple economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions in order to transition the Asia-Pacific region toward <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iges.or.jp\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-files\/6_Kazuhiko%20Takeuchi.pdf\">carbon neutrality<\/a>. A few countries in the Asia-Pacific region \u2014 including Japan, South Korea, Bhutan, Fiji, the Maldives, the Marshall Islands and Nepal \u2014 have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iges.or.jp\/en\/events\/20210323-0\">declared<\/a> their aim to be carbon neutral by 2050; and China has set its target as 2060. These commitments are incorporated in their nationally determined contributions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>The pandemic year ends with a tokenized carbon cap-and-trade solution<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A newly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Publications\/Departmental-Papers-Policy-Papers\/Issues\/2021\/03\/24\/Fiscal-Policies-to-Address-Climate-Change-in-Asia-and-the-Pacific-Opportunities-and-49896\">released<\/a> International Monetary Fund departmental paper makes fiscal policy recommendations for the region focused in three areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increase in the use of carbon taxes<\/li>\n<li>Increase in the ability to adapt to climate change; <\/li>\n<li>Increase pandemic spending for greener activities. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These recommendations are aimed at addressing climate change in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Turning_digital_technology_innovation_into_climate_action_in_the_Asia-Pacific_region\"><\/span>Turning digital technology innovation into climate action in the Asia-Pacific region<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With the COVID-19 pandemic, industrial digitalization has entered a new phase of explosive development.<\/p>\n<p>Houlin Zhao, secretary-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> of the International Telecommunication Union \u2014 which <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-T\/studygroups\/2017-2020\/05\/sg5rgap\/Pages\/default.aspx\">organizes<\/a> events and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-T\/climatechange\/Documents\/Year%20in%20Review\/year-in-review-and-upcoming-activities-2019-2020.pdf\">publishes<\/a> reports to raise awareness around the role of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/action\/environment-and-climate-change\/Documents\/Frontier-Technologies-Exec-Sum.pdf\">frontier technologies<\/a> with regard to the environment, climate change and the circular economy \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/publications\/Documents\/tsb\/2019-Turning-digital-technology-innovation-into-climate-action\/files\/downloads\/19-00405E-Turning-digital-technology-innovation.pdf\">explained<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cToday, we are faced with not one but two deep transformations. The first one, driven by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, the Internet of Things, 5G and many others, is changing how governments, businesses and individuals will act in this new century. As for the second transformation, climate change, it disrupts ecosystems, jeopardizing biodiversity, food and water security and the future of life on our planet. The question for us is whether humanity can turn this digital revolution into climate action and, most importantly, whether we can do it before it is too late.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Zhao continues: \u201cWith more and more people coming online, more data being generated and more devices connecting to the network, the digital ecosystem\u2019s carbon footprint is growing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Asia-Pacific region boasts tremendous potential, owing to the growing prominence of mobile payments and the development of central bank digital currencies, or CBDCs, in countries such as Australia, China, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cbdctracker.org\/\">others<\/a>. China\u2019s Blockchain-based Service Network is developing a global network that will support future CBDCs from multiple countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>How the digital yuan stablecoin impacts crypto in China: Experts answer<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The adoption of 5G technology is a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mccourier.com\/blockchain-in-telecom-market-2021-disclosing-latest-advancements-huawei-technologies-co-ltd-microsoft-corporation-oracle-corporation-sap-se\/\">catalyst<\/a> for the implementation of blockchain to improve scalability and interoperability. And China\u2019s Huawei and ZTE; South Korea\u2019s Samsung and LG Electronics; and Japan\u2019s Sony and NEC are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20210329005381\/en\/Asia-Pacific-5G-Regulatory-Developments-and-Outlook-Report-2021---ResearchAndMarkets.com\">leading<\/a> the way in 5G technology.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei was the world\u2019s first company to offer 5G technology and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202103\/1217854.shtml\">ranks<\/a> number one as a global telecommunications equipment maker. However, the United States is restricting the company\u2019s access to American technology that is key to producing modern 5G handsets and new 5G-capable mobile telecommunications infrastructure. As a result, the company has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Spotlight\/Huawei-crackdown\/Huawei-s-grip-on-China-market-softens-blow-of-US-crackdown\">seen<\/a> its market share decline outside China. <\/p>\n<p>This has also had a spillover effect on blockchain technology adoption, which enables telecommunications infrastructure to meet unprecedented service-level requirements by bolstering operations, data sharing and customer identity verification, and detecting telecom fraud. According to Denian Shi, deputy chief engineer of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the development of the global blockchain industry saw reduced investment\/financing and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.chaindd.com\/nictation\/3464054.html\">cooled down<\/a> during 2019 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The role of digitalization has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/dms_pub\/itu-d\/opb\/ind\/D-IND-DIG_TRENDS_ASP.01-2021-PDF-E.pdf\">become<\/a> central to continued economic and societal activity and to lessening the pandemic\u2019s impact. According to recent reports, the Asia-Pacific region is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchandmarkets.com\/reports\/4070981\/blockchain-technology-global-market-trajectory?utm_source=CI&amp;utm_medium=PressRelease&amp;utm_code=wfqlq5&amp;utm_campaign=1521936+-+Global+Blockchain+Technology+Market+Report+2021-2027%3a+Market+to+Reach+US%24+30.7+Billion+-+Blockchain+to+Improve+Transparency%2c+Security%2c+Immutability+%26+Accessibility+of+Financial+Systems+%26+Processes&amp;utm_exec=chdo54prd\">expected<\/a> to contribute about 19.3% of the overall global spending on blockchain technology, fueled by increased investments by the fintech sector. Integration of biometrics in smartphones amid the COVID-19 pandemic is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loshijosdelamalinche.com\/asia-pacific-digital-identity-solutions-market-by-2026-au10tix-duo-security-cisco-forgerock-gbg-idemia-imageware-systems\/\">expected<\/a> to grow blockchain-based digital identity solutions by 21% annually.<\/p>\n<p>The ever-increasing demand for connectivity and bandwidth by billions of devices in the region has made it important for wireless networks, blockchain platforms and computing devices to limit the total communications energy consumption and associated carbon footprint. With 5G being commercially deployed worldwide, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/technology\/lg-electronics-to-step-up-development-of-6g-network-technology-121032300698_1.html\">LG Electronics<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.cgtn.com\/news\/2021-04-14\/50-times-faster-than-5G-Huawei-s-6G-launch-set-for-2030-ZrTkNN5fQA\/index.html\">Huawei<\/a> have already begun working toward launching 6G networks, which will be \u201c50 times faster than 5G\u201d in spectrum efficiency, positioning capabilities and mobility. Studies show that 6G could <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/9312787\">provide<\/a> energy self-sustainability to the massive so-called \u201cInternet of Everything,\u201d with blockchain technology central to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/338831183_The_Role_of_Blockchain_in_6G_Challenges_Opportunities_and_Research_Directions\">addressing<\/a> significant challenges.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_worlds_top_solar_energy_adoption_is_in_the_Asia-Pacific_region\"><\/span>The world\u2019s top solar energy adoption is in the Asia-Pacific region<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The energy sector is the world\u2019s number-one pollutant, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.c2es.org\/content\/international-emissions\/\">accounting<\/a> for 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions. With energy demands continuously increasing \u2014 pushing CO2 emissions to their highest levels in history \u2014 methods of generating large quantities of clean energy have become a survival concern for the Asia-Pacific region. As a result, the region has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1029097\/renewable-energy-production-globally-by-region\/\">shifted<\/a> its focus to the decarbonization of the grid and the production of electricity from renewable energy. During March alone, 65 new renewable power plant contracts were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.power-technology.com\/contracts-analysis\/asia-pacific-power-plant-segment-contracts-in-march-2021\/\">announced<\/a> in the region, and nearly 80% of these plants are solar.<\/p>\n<p>China <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/investing\/092815\/5-countries-produce-most-solar-energy.asp\">leads<\/a> the world as the top producer of solar energy, seeking to transform its industrial structure, economy and society with disruptive innovation in the next-generation photovoltaic module for earth and space applications. India ranks second, Japan third and Vietnam fourth in the region. Three out of these four countries are also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aerospace.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-10\/Vedda-Jones_SolarPower_20201006_0.pdf\">conducting<\/a> research on space-based solar power and power beaming as a solution for the region\u2019s transition toward carbon neutrality, with Japan and China emerging as international leaders in this area.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/x-37b-space-plane-microwave-beam-experiment-otv-6.html\">conducted<\/a> its Photovoltaic Radiofrequency Antenna Module Flight Experiment, or PRAM-FX, to transform solar power into radio frequency microwave energy aboard the U.S. Space Force\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25275-x37b-space-plane.html\">X-37B<\/a> robotic space plane. According to Paul Jaffe, innovation power beaming and space solar portfolio lead at NRL, PRAM-FX is a 12-inch (30.5 centimeters) square tile that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/x-37b-space-plane-solar-power-beaming\">collects<\/a> solar energy and converts it to microwave power, but does not beam it anywhere.
