India has a new strategy for fighting its COVID-19 crisis \u2014 asking Twitter to take down the criticism of the government.<\/p>\n

Amid a record breaking surge in COVID-19 cases, the Indian government wants Twitter to remove posts criticizing its handling of the outbreak, according to a report.<\/p>\n

Officials cited 21 critical tweets in an emergency request to have them taken down under the country\u2019s Information Technology<\/a> Act, Reuters reported. <\/p>\n

Author Pieter Friedrich said his tweet slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> was indeed taken down in India, but was still available elsewhere. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe reality of #India<\/a> under the #Modi<\/a> regime. At least the healthcare is free? #COVIDSecondWaveInIndia<\/a> #IndiaFightsCorona<\/a> #ModiFailsIndia<\/a> #ModiResign<\/a>,\u201d he wrote in the offending tweet, alongside a photo of a woman sitting on the street with what app<\/a>ears to be a ventilator over her face. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we receive a valid legal request, we review it under both the Twitter Rules and local law,\u201d the Twitter spokeswoman said in statement to Reuters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the content violates Twitter\u2019s rules, the content will be removed from the service. If it is determined to be illegal in a particular jurisdiction, but not in violation of the Twitter Rules, we may withhold access to the content in India only,\u201d she said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
