“#’Celebration of Life’ for rapp<\/a>er DMX kicks off in Brooklyn<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The life and music of rap icon DMX are being honored at a \u201cCelebration of Life\u201d memorial service at Brooklyn\u2019s Barclays Center.<\/p>\n

The private service \u2013originally set to kick off at 4 p.m., then pushed back to 5:30 p.m., and only begun at 6:30 p.m \u2014 is being livestreamed on the rapper\u2019s\u00a0YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nas, Kanye West\u2019s choir, and some of the rapper\u2019s 15 children are among the performers.<\/p>\n

The rapper\u2019s bright red coffin was carried into Barclays on a massive monster truck that roared from Yonkers \u2014 where DMX grew up as Earl Simmons \u2014 to Brooklyn in a two-hour procession of some 2,000 motorcyclists, ATVs and exotic cars.<\/p>\n

It was a fitting send-off given the \u201cRide or Die\u201d rapper\u2019s influence on street racing culture.<\/p>\n

Traffic stopped along Brooklyn\u2019s Flatbush Avenue as the rap-blasting entourage slowly made its way to the arena.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat dude changed my life \u2026 he got me through some hard times,\u201d said fan Tarah Dorsey, 43, who travel<\/a>ed to Barclays from Providence, RI to honor the rapper whose music supported her through family deaths, a prison stint and a struggle with addiction.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was always transparent about his life \u2014 \u2018I\u2019ve been through this, I\u2019ve been through that,\u2019\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut at the end of the day God and Jesus had his back. And I always felt the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love DMX from the time I was a teenager,\u201d fan Patricia Brown, 61, said outside the stadium.<\/p>\n

The retired NYCHA employee and Brownsville resident wore a DMX shirt, and said she \u201ccried hard\u201d when she found out he died.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a die hard fan. His (\u201cRuff Ryders\u201d CD is in my car right now. I\u2019m riding with him all the way down here and all the way back, ever since his death,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Asked how she\u2019ll celebrate her favorite rapper, Brown said, \u201cI smoke my bud all day.<\/p>\n

\u201cMama bear smoke bud,\u201d she added, lighting a joint and smiling.<\/p>\n

DMX\u2019s memorial service is being livestreamed on the rapper\u2019s YouTube channel,<\/a> but it is a private affair, its live audience limited to family and friends due to coronavirus social<\/a> distancing rules.<\/p>\n

New York State guidelines currently restrict Barclays Center to 10% capacity.<\/p>\n

The list of performers for the service has been a closely-kept secret, though Page Six learned earlier this week that super-producer Swizz Beatz was involved <\/a>in setting up the lineup.<\/p>\n

DMX performed at Barclays twice, according to\u00a0Billboard<\/a>, though the venue opened a decade after the rapper\u2019s chart-topping heyday, with hits including \u00a0\u201cRuff Ryders\u2019 Anthem<\/a>,\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s My Name<\/a>\u201d and \u201cWhat These Bitches Want<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The father of 15\u00a0died April 9 at age 50<\/a> at a New York hospital, a week after a drug overdose.<\/p>\n

The NYPD estimated that 2,000 motorcyclists joined in the memorial procession \u2014 and was on hand with a \u201csignificant deployment\u201d including by police helicopter a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are plans for a procession to pass through multiple boroughs with 2,000 motorcycles and numerous cars with the final destination at a major public venue in the heart of downtown Brooklyn,\u201d the rep said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis significant deployment is a common sense decision for public safety.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
