Many of the questions on the recent New York state English exam for grades 3-8 duplicated ones from old tests on a practice Web site, rendering the exams worthless. It\u2019s a giveaway that the State Education Department\u2019s mission is now to spread ignorance about how little children are learning.<\/p>\n

Stunningly, SED\u2019s Emily DeSantis told The Post that the scores will be deemed \u201cvalid\u201d \u2014 and claimed the pandemic made it impossible to develop new questions.<\/p>\n

The spokeswoman cited the department\u2019s supposed \u201cinability to field test questions during the pandemic\u201d and noted that some experts said it would OK.<\/p>\n

Which still doesn\u2019t explain why SED also <\/em>recycled many of the same questions from a test-prep site it runs. <\/p>\n

This looks like deliberate sabotage: SED, which is effectively controlled by Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and thus by the state\u2019s teachers\u2019 unions, doesn\u2019t want parents knowing how far their kids fell behind in a year of mostly virtual \u201clearning.\u201d It first asked the federal Education Department to waive the Regents and other assessment exams for a second straight year. When that was rejected, they decided to offer a bogus, rigged exam instead.<\/p>\n

A little creativity would\u2019ve allowed it to field-test other questions (plenty of other states and nations managed to do assessments, after all) or at least to avoid duplicating ones on its own practice tests. <\/p>\n

Instead (as Frances Kweller, founder of tutoring company Kweller Prep, puts it), \u201cNew York can now pretend that there was no learning loss \u2014 a claim we all know isn\u2019t true.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bottom line: The people in charge of education in this state don\u2019t give a damn about the kids. Their top priority is to keep you in the dark about the system\u2019s failures.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
