Based on the Broadway musical that first launched in 1957, and was then turned into a film in 1961,\u00a0<em>West Side Story<\/em> is the tale of star-crossed lovers in 1957 New York. Unlike the 1961 film, Spielberg only wanted actors with Hispanic backgrounds to play Hispanic characters, and he\u2019s assembled a cast of familiar faces and new names. He\u2019s also brought back <strong>Rita Moreno<\/strong>, who won an Oscar for her role in the 1961 film, and here plays a new character. I absconded with it\u2014this was the cast album from the 1957 Broadway musical\u2014and just fell completely in love with it as a kid.\u00a0<em>West Side Story<\/em>\u00a0has been that one haunting temptation that I have finally given in to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway musical, which was written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and concept, direction, and choreography by Jerome Robbins. <strong>Justin Peck<\/strong> choreographs the musical numbers in the new film.<\/p>\n<p><em>West Side Story\u00a0<\/em>\u201cexplores young love and tensions between rival gangs the Jets and the Sharks on the streets of 1957 New York.\u201d With a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a> from frequent Spielberg collaborator\u00a0T<strong>ony Kushner<\/strong> and a musical team that includes <strong>Gustavo Dudamel<\/strong> taking on\u00a0Leonard Bernstein\u2019s original score and\u00a0<strong>David Newman<\/strong> arranging the score for the new adaptation, the cast includes <strong>Ansel Elgort<\/strong> as Tony, <strong>Rachel Zegler <\/strong>as Maria,\u00a0<strong>Ariana DeBose<\/strong> as Anita, <strong>Ana Isabelle<\/strong> as Rosalia, <strong>Corey Stoll<\/strong> as Lieutenant Schrank, <strong>Brian d\u2019Arcy James<\/strong> as Officer Krupke, <strong>Curtiss Cook<\/strong> as Abe, and Rita Moreno as Valentina.<\/p>\n<p>As excited as I am for a new Spielberg movie, and a new Spielberg\u00a0<em>musical<\/em>, this take on\u00a0<em>West Side Story<\/em> is bound to draw criticism for its leading man. Last year, a woman accused Elgort of sexual misconduct in 2014, when she was 17 and he was 20. Elgort <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/ansel-elgort-says-relationship-accuser-was-consensual-not-assault-1512368\">denied<\/a> the allegation and said the relationship was brief and consensual.
