\n Former Fox News anchor Shepard Smith is set to join CNBC as the host of a new nightly newscast.<\/p>\n

The 56-year-old newscaster will host an hourlong weekday broadcast at 7 p.m. ET called \u201cThe News with Shepard Smith,\u201d which is expected to start in the fall, the network said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Smith, who spent 23 years at Fox, left the network last October, telling news outlets that he asked the network to let him out of his contract so he could start \u201ca new chapter.\u201d\u00a0 Fox News shares a common owner with News Corp., the publisher of The Post.<\/p>\n

Smith, who grabs the role of chief general<\/a> news anchor at CNBC, has stayed tight-lipped on his future plans until Wednesday when he said in a statement: \u201cI am honored to continue to pursue the truth, both for CNBC\u2019s loyal viewers and for those who have been following my reporting for decades in good times and in bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith is the first big talent hire following NBCUniversal\u2019s move to reunite its three news brands \u2014 NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC \u2014 under the direction of newly-app<\/a>ointed NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde.<\/p>\n

Smith\u2019s program is part of a broader overhaul of CNBC\u2019s lineup, which carries live business-focused programming during the day, and an odd assortment of shows that include \u201cJay Leno\u2019s Garage\u201d and reruns of \u201cShark Tank\u201d and \u201cUndercover Boss.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
