Disaster episodes make good television, from the unforgettable Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/i><\/a> plane crash in 2012 to last season\u2019s staggering tsunami on 9-1-1<\/i><\/a>. Tuesday on The Resident<\/i><\/a>, a twister strikes Atlanta \u2014 and Chastain Park Memorial Hospital is in its deadly path.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a view of the tornado app<\/a>roaching through a window,\u201d executive producer Peter Elkoff previews. \u201cThen it comes in through the ambulance bay with exploding glass!\u201d<\/p>\n

The ceiling collapses, trapping Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) and new surgical intern Leela Devi (Anuja Joshi) with an impaled worker who needs immedia<\/a>te treatment. Obstacle No. 1: \u201cLeela is not ready to perform surgeries on her own, and he\u2019s an internist, a diagnostician,\u201d says Elkoff.<\/p>\n

Obstacle No. 2: no power\u2026but at least the cordless drill is charged! \u201cIn a case that\u2019s way outside her pay grade, Leela shows up and becomes a hero,\u201d Elkoff adds. \u201cAnd it really starts to deepen her relationship with Devon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, newlywed doctor Conrad Hawkins and very<\/i> pregnant nurse practitioner Nic Nevin (Matt Czuchry<\/a> and Emily VanCamp<\/a>, above) work together to save the fractured leg of an EMT (Allison Gabriel) who was pinned under the cement rubble from the ceiling. They fear they may have to amputate.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really emotional story and good, bloody medicine,\u201d says Elkoff. The couple also is torn on a more personal issue concerning Nic\u2019s pregnancy, which they debate during the crisis. \u201cThe question is, when does Nic stop working, and when does Conrad?\u201d (The baby will arrive by the end of the season, he also promises.)<\/p>\n

Somehow amid this catastrophe, a jaw-dropping surgery called autotransplantation is performed by Drs. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood<\/a>), AJ Austin (Malcolm-Jamal Warner<\/a>), and Jake Wong (Conrad Ricamora<\/a>). Tumors have spread throughout a 6-year-old girl\u2019s organs in her abdomen. \u201cThe only way to cure her is to actually remove the organs and take the tumors off outside the body<\/i>,\u201d Elkoff says.<\/p>\n

With this episode, he adds, \u201cwe wanted a lot of energy and excitement and surgeries getting us to a nice story at the end.\u201d All we can say is, phew!<\/p>\n
