April 23 \u2013 Surrounded by clear blue skies and fields of sugar cane crops on the Pacific coast, a\u00a0farm\u00a0in the northwest of\u00a0Costa\u00a0Rica\u00a0is now home to a giant\u00a0radar\u00a0capable of tracking small\u00a0objects\u00a0in\u00a0space\u00a0that threaten the safety of astronauts and satellites.<\/p>\n

Costa\u00a0Rican President Carlos Alvarado and US and\u00a0Costa\u00a0Rican astronauts on Thursday unveiled the four large reflective panels that make up the commercial\u00a0radar, which is connected to the servers of aerospace\u00a0company LeoLabs in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis commercial\u00a0radar\u00a0is the most advanced that exists in the world,\u201d said Alvarado.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Costa\u00a0Rica\u00a0Space\u00a0Radar\u00a0can monitor\u00a0objects\u00a0that transit in low Earth orbit near the planet\u2019s equator, an advantage offered by the geographical location.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven an object the size of a golf ball travel<\/a>ing at 30,000 kilometers (18,641 miles) per hour overhead, a tiny amount of those radio waves will bounce off it. It can be picked up by these giant reflector dishes behind us,\u201d said former astronaut and LeoLabs co-founder Edward Lu.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0radar\u00a0is located in the town of Filadelfia, in the province of Guanacaste, near the headquarters of Ad Astra Rocket, a commercial partner of LeoLabs. The local company run by former\u00a0Costa\u00a0Rican astronaut Franklin Chang-D\u00edaz was another reason for choosing the\u00a0radar\u00a0site, LeoLabs said.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
