Here\u2019s how to use it.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Am_I_Being_Tracked\"><\/span>Why Am I Being Tracked?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To get the most out of their advertising budgets, advertisers want their ads to be seen by customers who will buy the product or service they are offering. That way, they don\u2019t spend money advertising to the wrong audience. To increase the effectiveness of ads, companies build\u00a0advertising profiles on individuals, and these profiles can follow you across services run by different companies on the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Apple began to fight back against this practice, building privacy controls into iOS 14\/iPadOS 14. As of the 14.5 update, Apple requires app developers to ask your permission before adding information from that app or data from your iPhone or iPad to an advertising profile that would track you beyond its own app.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>The Many Ways Websites Track You Online<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Ask_iPhone_and_iPad_Apps_Not_To_Track_You\"><\/span>How to Ask iPhone and iPad Apps Not To Track You<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Whenever you use an iPhone or iPad app that wants to track you in iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, or higher, you\u2019ll see a pop-up message that reads \u201cAllow [app name] to track your activity across other companies\u2019 apps and websites?\u201d Just below that, you\u2019ll find a line about what exactly the app wants to do with your data, such as \u201cdeliver personalized ads\u201d or \u201cmeasure advertising efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t want data from this app to go toward building a tracking profile that goes beyond the company that makes the app, tap \u201cAsk App Not to Track.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-725108\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ask_not_to_track.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Tap &quot;Ask App Not to Track.&quot;\" width=\"650\" height=\"463\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>So the question remains: why does Apple use the word \u201cask?\u201d It\u2019s because it\u2019s still possible in the course of using the app for data brokers, ad networks, and app makers to potentially track your activities using data such as an IP address.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a voluntary process. In Apple\u2019s explanation for how \u201cAsk Not to Track\u201d works in Settings &gt; Privacy &gt; Tracking (tap \u201cLearn more\u201d), Apple says, \u201cApp developers are responsible for ensuring they comply with your choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By clicking \u201cAsk App Not to Track,\u201d you\u2019re trusting the app vendor to follow through and honor this request.
