“#Julius Randle suffers clunker amid \u2018incredible month\u2019 for Knicks<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The Knicks\u2019 winning streak and Julius Randle\u2019s massive roll ended Monday in the 118-110 loss to the Suns.<\/p>\n

Randle had scored at least 30 points in six of the previous seven game<\/a>s, including two 40-plus nights. But against Phoenix, Randle, the NBA\u2019s leader in minutes, looked worn down as he was held to 18 points and shot 6 of 17 from the field. He also had just four assists and six rebounds with three turnovers. He faced a ton of double teams and didn\u2019t have the juice to break through.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s had an incredible month,\u201d coach Tom Thibodeau said. \u201cSo he\u2019s going to have a lot of attention that\u2019s going to require a lot of energy. He\u2019s double-teamed on almost every play. But he\u2019s in unbelievable shape. He\u2019s our engine, and I have a lot of confidence in him.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was due for a dud after all the accolades pouring his way \u2014 the latest from ex-Knicks enforcer Charles Oakley, who claimed he prefers Randle over New Orleans\u2019 lefty power forward Zion Williamson.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think [Randle\u2019s] a better version of Zion Williamson, to me, because he can do more,\u201d Oakley said earlier Monday on SiriusXM Radio. \u201cZion is just hype in the league. But in the playoffs, he\u2019ll be just like the \u201cGreek Freak\u201d [Giannis Antetokounmpo. They\u2019ll have the wall for you. First of all, Zion Williamson got to get the playoffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Randle\u2019s Knicks beat Williamson\u2019s team twice in four days, even though the Knicks were betting underdogs in each contest against a Pelicans team not even in the top 10 in the West.<\/p>\n

The Knicks, in fourth place in the East, are finally awakening the league. Randle, after making his first All-Star team, is expected to win the NBA\u2019s Most Improved Player Award and receive a spot on one of the three All-NBA teams. There\u2019s now a push for him getting on MVP ballots to confirm the chants he\u2019s heard since the Garden opened to fans on Feb. 23.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said last year, [the Knicks] didn\u2019t have a superstar,\u201d said Oakley, who has spent years criticizing the Knicks. \u201cAnd now they got a superstar. Congratulations. He\u2019s left-handed, and they can\u2019t stop him because these guys don\u2019t want to stand in front him. Once you make one move, he can get to the rim every time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Randle leads the NBA in minutes as he played in his 61st of the team\u2019s 62 games Monday. He has five trip<\/a>le-doubles and went into the game averaging 24 points, six assists and 10.5 rebounds in the best season any Knick has had since Patrick Ewing.<\/p>\n

Oakley, who has feuded with owner James Dolan, acknowledges Basketball New York \u2014 Nets included \u2014 is getting closer to the glorious 1990s. Oakley starred in that Knicks era as arguably the NBA\u2019s top defensive player when Tom Thibodeau was an assistant coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re moving the needle,\u201d Oakley said. \u201cBrooklyn is winning because they\u2019ve got three, four superstars. New York is winning because they have a great coach in Thibodeau. Thibodeau was always a guy who knew defense. If you want structure, you need a veteran coach. Just look at what Nate McMillan is doing at Atlanta.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
