Instead, the sensor \u201csees\u201d heaps more data about the light levels and colors in the scene than it can possibly record as a single compressed image file.<\/p>\n<p>If your smartphone or camera is set to shoot JPGs, however, when you click that shutter button, it processes all that data down to a small image file that you can send to your friends or post on Instagram, and it throws away everything that it didn\u2019t need. It\u2019s still using all the raw data to make the image, but you just don\u2019t have access to it afterward.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you want all that photo information so that you can use it when you edit your images? Well, that\u2019s where RAW photos come in. Instead of shooting usable but compressed JPGs, your camera will save a data file that includes all the image information when you shoot RAW. You won\u2019t be able to upload it straight to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>, but you\u2019ll have a lot more latitude when you edit.<\/p>\n<p>Most camera manufacturers have their own specific RAW format. For example, Canon\u2019s is CRW, and Nikon\u2019s is NEF. However, Adobe\u2019s Digital Negative (DNG) format is slowly becoming a recognized standard.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest downside of RAW files is that they need to be processed into more widely supported image formats (mostly JPGs, sometimes TIFFs) before you can do much with them. When you shoot JPGs with your smartphone or camera, the device does all the processing for you. It\u2019s often called a digital darkroom because it has the same role that a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darkroom\">traditional darkroom<\/a> does in film photography: taking your rough negatives and turning them into usable photos. It\u2019s available as a plug-in in Photoshop and After Effects, can be accessed from Bridge, and is what runs under the hood in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-723680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screenshot-2021-04-16-at-15.38.25.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"edited photo in camera raw\" width=\"650\" height=\"399\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">These kinds of edits are next to impossible to make with JPGs\u2014at least, if you want something that looks good.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The advantage of using Camera Raw over, say, letting your smartphone do its thing, is that you\u2019re in control of the process. You can use all that extra data to make non-destructive edits. Shadows a bit too dark?\u00a0You\u2019ve got the image information to brighten them up. Highlights starting to blow? You can fix that, too.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just the lights and the darks that you can control, but the color as well. Using Camera Raw enables you to completely reset the\u00a0white balance, or how blue or yellow the whole image appears. Resetting the white balance with JPGs\u00a0is\u00a0not always a trivial task and can be hard to get right.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re serious about taking great photos, then this kind of editing control is essential.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Open_Photos_in_Camera_Raw\"><\/span>How to Open Photos in Camera Raw<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Camera Raw is a plug-in built into Photoshop. If you open a RAW image (regardless of the manufacturer\u2019s format) in Photoshop, it will automatically start.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, to access Camera Raw, open a RAW file in Photoshop however you normally like to. Just open your image in one of those apps instead, and you\u2019ll be good to go. For the purposes of this article, I\u2019m going to focus on the Photoshop plug-in version.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Camera Raw is also available as a Photoshop filter, so you can use its editing tools on your regular images. For example, there\u2019s an Exposure slider that you drag left and right to adjust the exposure of your image. It\u2019s the same for other more specific features like clarity and texture.<\/p>\n<p>The editing controls are split into nine sections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Basic<\/strong>: All the tools necessary to adjust the brightness, contrast, and color of your image.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Curve<\/strong>: A histogram and curve tool similar to the curves adjustment layer in Photoshop.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Detail<\/strong>: Sharpening and noise reduction tools.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Color Mixer<\/strong>: Sliders for controlling how colors are displayed in color images, or for controlling how different colors are converted to various shades of black and gray in monochrome images.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Color Grading<\/strong>: These tools allow you to creatively adjust the overall colors in your image.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optics<\/strong>: Fix or minimize optical distortion and aberration either automatically (using Adobe\u2019s database of lenses) or with manual tools.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geometry<\/strong>: Correct for perspective and camera-angle problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effects<\/strong>: Add image grain or a vignette.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calibration<\/strong>: Advanced controls for handling how Camera Raw interprets the data in the RAW file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screenshot-2021-04-16-at-15.40.34.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"editing tools in camera raw\" width=\"650\" height=\"519\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There are also tools in the right sidebar that enable you to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Crop your image.<\/li>\n<li>Remove small spots and blemishes.<\/li>\n<li>Apply various other edits to specific areas of your image by using a brush, a graduated filter, or a radial filter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, Camera Raw gives you a huge amount of control over how exactly the data in your RAW file is interpreted. Even though it\u2019s part of Photoshop, it\u2019s rare that you\u2019ll need to use regular Photoshop tools to make any adjustments if you process your files in Camera Raw.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Save_Photos_from_Camera_Raw\"><\/span>How to Save Photos from Camera Raw<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Camera Raw is a non-destructive image editor. Nothing in the original RAW file is ever permanently changed. Instead, all of the edits are saved to a sidecar file (or, if it\u2019s a DNG, they can be embedded).<\/p>\n<p>Saving photos from Camera Raw can be a bit confusing. Your three main options are as follows.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screenshot-2021-04-16-at-15.41.18.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"camera raw saving options\" width=\"650\" height=\"342\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>To save the original RAW file with your edits, click \u201cDone\u201d in the bottom-right corner. This will create a sidecar file alongside the RAW file in its folder. It does a great job of taking your RAW files and giving you the tools to turn them into incredible photos.<\/p>\n<p>If you only edit the occasional RAW file and already use Photoshop, it\u2019s probably the simplest tool for you.<\/p>\n<p>If you shoot a lot of RAW images, it\u2019s worth your while to look at Lightroom. It has the same image-editing controls, but the additional catalog features make managing all your files a lot easier.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t signed up for the Adobe Creative Cloud, you don\u2019t need to do that just to process RAW files.
