Over one year later and now vaccinated, as he first admitted on-air Monday \u2014 back from yet another vacation \u2014 Stern still has no intention of ever returning to his Midtown studio, his luxury Upper West Side apartment, or any semblance of pre-pandemic life again.<\/p>\n<p>The Howard Stern who stayed on air as planes flew into the World Trade Center is unrecognizable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings will never get back to normal,\u201d he declared just two weeks ago. \u201cI do not believe the pandemic will ever be over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a once-constant listener like me, this is heretical, especially here in New York City, where every single neighborhood is struggling to survive. Also, Howard: This pandemic will end, even though you, a germophobic recluse, clearly wish it would not.<\/p>\n<p>But such sentiments have defined Stern\u2019s show and attitude this past year: Pessimism, anger, and a worldview that shrinks ever inward, limited in size and scope to The Basement \u2014 the literal and metaphorical dwelling place of this once great show.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>Stern, 67, renewed his contract with SiriusXM last December, signing for five years at a reported $120 million per. As memorialized by an analyst in Stern\u2019s 1997 biopic \u201cPrivate Parts\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe average radio listener listens for 18 minutes. The average Howard Stern fan listens for, are you ready for this, an hour and 20 minutes . . . Answer most commonly given? \u2018I want to see what he\u2019ll say next.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for those who loathed Stern: \u201cThe average Stern hater listens for two and a half hours a day . . . Most common answer? \u2018I want to see what he\u2019ll say next.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, it\u2019s all too easy to predict what Stern will say next. Put us all out of your misery.<\/p>\n<p>Consider a typical show, consisting \u2014 on a daily, \u201cGroundhog Day\u201d-like basis \u2014 of such content as imitations of his nonagenarian parents and their hearing loss (\u201cWhat?! What did you say?!\u201d) \u2014 as enjoyable as talking to one\u2019s own hard-of-hearing relatives \u2014 while revisiting slights and traumas from his childhood yet insisting that decades of three-to-four-day a week therapy have made him less angry and more evolved.<\/p>\n<p>We usually segue into graphic, sex-obsessed talks with Ronnie the Limo Driver, a 71-year-old Stern show mainstay who has now become its lead character, eating up airtime and surpassing Stern himself. It says something that even the most picked-upon loyalist \u2014 say, his producer of 37 years \u2014 doesn\u2019t even bother to really fight back anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Why? My guess is that Stern\u2019s rants are so expected and so often hit the same notes \u2014 personal hygiene, looks, financial status, marital troubles, professional incompetence \u2014 that even attacked staffers feels the same boredom that long ago came over the listener.<\/p>\n<p>And how could they not? Stern long ago abandoned his best attribute, going after famous hypocrites. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2020\/12\/28\/alec-baldwin-boasted-about-hilarias-emotional-health\/?_ga=2.130050315.582842277.1619385561-1460110259.1616625059\">Hilaria Baldwin<\/a>, for example, pretending for years to be from Spain \u2014 when really she\u2019s from Boston \u2014 and bagging a movie star would once have been Stern show fodder for days.<\/p>\n<p>But Hilaria barely rates a mention. Why? Can\u2019t piss off Howard\u2019s good pal Alec in the Hamptons. Upon the announcement of Stern\u2019s imminent contract renewal in 2020, B. Riley analyst Zack Silver wrote to clients, in part:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Howard Stern really still worth $100M+ a year? Our recent survey work suggests that only a low-single-digit percentage of respondents subscribe to SiriusXM solely because of Howard Stern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silver suggested that the re-up most benefited the company\u2019s stock price. \u201cFor investors,\u201d he wrote, \u201cwe believe that a potential renewal with Stern serves as a proof point that SiriusXM can continue to retain and attract top talent to its service.\u201d<br \/>Really, why should Stern exert any effort into his show when he\u2019s been rewarded for hardly working? The less he puts into the show and the more he treats his paying audience with contempt, the more money he makes. No wonder he won\u2019t leave his bunker.<\/p>\n<p>All that said, one of the most perplexing decisions to fans, of late, is the unexplained dropping of the show\u2019s most popular segment, historically airing last: The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>, with sidekick Robin Quivers going through the day\u2019s headlines while Stern riffed extemporaneously.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"Robin Quivers has been Howard Stern's longtime sidekick.\" class=\"wp-image-18078493 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/howard-stern-050.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/howard-stern-050.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/howard-stern-050.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/howard-stern-050.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/howard-stern-050.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Robin Quivers has been Howard Stern\u2019s longtime sidekick.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">The LIFE Images Collection via G<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The News cost nothing to produce, was a must-listen, and usually guaranteed at least one unpredictable hot take from Stern, earning him a spot in the news cycle.<br \/>Yet in quarantine \u2014 the most newsworthy year in recent memory \u2014 this segment has completely disappeared, with zero explanation. There may be no greater F-you to his longtime fan base: Even that is too much work.<\/p>\n<p>The self-proclaimed King of All Media has, without seeming to realize it, given a master class in how to lose an entirely captive audience.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>SiriusXM doesn\u2019t release ratings, but as far back as 2013, Stern knew he was in trouble. He called a crisis meeting, thankfully taped and leaked by a disgruntled employee (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DvL46X6qCso\">you can watch it on YouTube<\/a> ). This is Howard Stern as Norma Desmond, blaming everyone else for his decline.<\/p>\n<p>Here he is standing alone on a stage, his beleaguered staff seated below.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Howard Stern leaked Infamous Staff Meeting - 2013\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DvL46X6qCso?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou know what?\u201d he begins. \u201cIf this show isn\u2019t here in three years, you don\u2019t have a f\u2014king job! . . . I\u2019m pissed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was just getting started. Nah \u2014 he kept on blaming the overworked, underappreciated and abused staff, who, he added, looked like unwashed slobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look like we have homeless people working here,\u201d Stern said.
