\n One-hundred fifty luminaries, mostly of the left, signed an impassioned statement against the intolerance of cancel culture \u2014 and were promptly targeted by intolerant liberals for cancellation.<\/p>\n

Liberal culture in 2020 is beyond parody: The maddened mobs that came for the letter writers proved their point instantly and perfectly.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Letter on Justice and Open Debate\u201d app<\/a>eared Tuesday in Harper\u2019s Magazine, signed by novelists (Margaret Atwood), academics (Steven Pinker), journalists (Malcolm Gladwell) and musicians (Wynton Marsalis). They decry \u201ca new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate,\u201d with the \u201cfree exchange of information and ideas .\u2009.\u2009. daily becoming more constricted.\u201d They worry about \u201cintolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cancel culture is a beast of the left, and though the writers are against conformity, they were careful to trumpet their #Resistance bona fides: \u201cThe forces of illiberalism\u201d have \u201ca powerful ally in \u00adDonald Trump, who represents a real threat to democracy.\u201d But the \u201cdogma\u201d and \u201ccoercion\u201d they\u2019ve \u201ccome to expect\u201d on \u201cthe radical right\u201d is becoming a feature of the #Resistance, and \u201cright-wing demagogues\u201d are \u201cexploiting\u201d it.<\/p>\n

Indeed, \u201cDonald Trump is the Canceler-in-Chief,\u201d Thomas Chatterton Williams, who shepherded the letter, assured The New York Times. Huh? Who has Don canceled lately?<\/p>\n

The virtue-signaling wasn\u2019t enough, of course. \u201c\u200a\u2018The Letter\u2019 was shaped\/spearheaded from conversations by four privileged white men,\u201d huffed New York Times reporter Farnaz Fassihi. \u201cApparently they felt entitled to really weigh in on racism, diversity and inclusion. That says it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Never mind that the spearheader, Williams, is a black man. Fassihi is completely condescending to the many women and nonwhite people on the list. Does she think they can\u2019t possibly have ideas and opinions of their own? Can they be nothing more than tools of \u201cprivileged white men\u201d?<\/p>\n

Having a diverse demographic isn\u2019t enough for the new left if the minorities stand beside people in the wrong demographic. Anything uttered by white men is suspect, even if plenty of others agree.<\/p>\n

Reginald Dwayne Betts, a poet the Times noted \u201cspent more than eight years in prison for a carjacking,\u201d is particularly concerned about the \u201cunforgiving nature\u201d of the culture. Does his experience as a black man not count?<\/p>\n

The letter didn\u2019t list specific \u00adexamples of cancel culture, but the responses to it did them one better.<\/p>\n

Emily VanDerWerff wrote to her Vox editors complaining that another staffer, Matthew Yglesias, signed the letter. \u201cHe has never been anything but kind to me and has often supported my work publicly,\u201d she conceded, but \u201chis signature being on the letter makes me feel less safe at Vox,\u201d because it was also signed by \u201cseveral prominent anti-trans voices\u201d and \u201ccontained many dog whistles towards anti-trans positions.\u201d (J.K. Rowling, another signer, is a critic of gender ideology; presumably that\u2019s who VanDerWerff had in mind.)<\/p>\n

VanDerWerff claims she isn\u2019t trying to get Yglesias fired \u2014 but at what else would a note like hers be aiming?<\/p>\n

Already, one signer has folded. Writer and trans activist Jennifer Finney Boylan tweeted a mea culpa: \u201cI did not know who else had signed that letter. I thought I was endorsing a well-meaning, if vague, message against Internet shaming,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI am so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another letter writer might have told the Times the same thing \u2014 we don\u2019t know because she would only speak \u201con the condition of anonymity in an effort to stay out of the growing storm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Countless liberals proved the letter\u2019s point with their outrage at its warning that an illiberal society \u201cinvariably hurts those who lack power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two of the signers understand that intimately. The dissident Garry Kasparov can\u2019t return to his home in Russia, for fear that Vladimir Putin\u2019s henchmen will throw him out a window for his tireless work for democracy. It\u2019s insulting to suggest their courageousness counts for nothing because some white men agree with them. But it says everything you need to know about today\u2019s \u00adilliberal left. Once they come for their own, there is no hope for anybody else.<\/p>\n
